So I'm running my YLW today for the first time; I'm finding that the XL engine + the AC/20 make for a walking train wreck waiting to happen. If they aren't blowing off the 20 then the XL is suffering critical damage and taking me out of the match. I realize this isn't a Zombie Hugger but wow; the YLW of lore seemed way less fragile LOL

So, anyone running a STD in their Wang?

I am currently pretty much running stock with DHS. w/o those Missile hardpoints I find this 'mech lacks a lot of variety options.

You can run a gauss as a sniper, AC/20 for a 'brawler', or even dual UAC/5 for heavy DPS at good range. But that is pretty much your limit on valuable choices. A single AC/5 or UAC/5 doesn't cut it, nor does an AC/10[LB].

I may run a Gauss Rifle with an XL and an ER Large Laser in the chest for range. Could even try this with dual UAC/5.

Sweet, lemme know how that turns out cause I'm grinding with AC/20, 2MLas, 99KPH, AMS and I'm dropping my AC/20 like a stripper with how often it is taken off.

I tried to run a pair of UAC/5's on my shiny new Wang tonight. It was... fine. There just doesn't seem to be enough weight to pack the two guns plus enough ammo to make them useful and still carry mediums. I have an XL265 that I put in it but just couldn't get more than 100 shots with it, which is 50 with two uacs and doesn't last long. Maybe if I had a few spouse million I could put a slightly smaller engine in it and make it decent but just learning to get good at protecting the right arm seems a better long term strategy.

I do with a STD 260. It works well for me :)

PoinDexter has beaten me to it. I run a hunchback with an AC/20, 3xMLas and a STD 250 and it's my best 'mech. The build posted above should do nicely.

The Wang is a Hunchback that puts its weapon in a vulnerable arm instead of a (somewhat) safer torso slot and can't mount as many weapons. You can play a Wang like a Hunchback, but the Hunchback does the same thing better, so why are you playing the Wang?

The only mechanical advantage the Wang has over the Hunchback is it's max engine size (up to 300, 97-106 kph).

    My build is posted here:

I've been doing pretty well with this setup which is very similar to your Grimm Variant. I play like a chicken little light mech and go for flanks and bounce between cover, since even with a standard engine there's 2 body spots that will take your AC20 out of commission.

My basic thinking is this: if I lose my right torso or right arm I lose my AC20. My entire reason to exist is that AC20; hence, if my right torso is shot off I could still be alive with a STD engine, but is living without my AC20 really living? No. My Cicada has more firepower than my Wang with its AC20 shot off. Best to do everything in my power to prevent either my right arm or torso from being lost. So I max out the armor to take hits and I max out the engine to avoid hits.

An XL engine allows me to boost up my speed by another 15-20 kph compared to a STD build, and gives me a slight edge on getting-da-heck-outta-fire. 0 Line-of-sight = 0 incoming damage, and my speed and AC20 let me choose where I appear and punish when I do.

I haven't had any survival problems. I make use of my shield arm and I do quite well. The big issue I have is ammo, I went in with 4 tons my first match and came out with 1 shot left, so I'm running 6 tons and it works great.

I am running my YLW with a Std 255, just scored 4 kills in Tourmaline... one Atlas which decided to focus on my Jager wingman, one Catapult with open front CT being smacked by said Jager and myself, one Raven who was a bit damaged beforehand and saw me coming too late and a Raven 3L attacking me from behind as I was a few meters away from Kappa. His entire inner systems were pretty banged up so my AC/20 was merely a coup de grace... but I like the reassurance that I can still zombie *if* I lose this arm...

Yesterday I kept a Flame and three lights busy for at least 30 seconds as they decided to strip me off of my limbs one by one and they killed me by eventually legging me... maybe a PUG is not the best benchmark for the Centurion's sturdiness, but I like the fact that I can still move about, melt some armour or even cap a point even if my AC 20 is gone.

My YLW is a support mech... whether by softening some CTs, finishing targets off or by heading towards a cap point... heck, even distracting the enemy as I am shot to shreds means that during this time, my team can continue to perform.

If I find myself unable to bring that AC20 to bare with the backside of an assault or other problems, I may have to consider an XL engine... but as it stands, I pilot around as a support mech and escort for my slower buddies.

I picked up a YLW at the start of the sale this weekend. I have other Cents with standards and XLs so decided to go standard with my YLW and has been the right call so far. My build started out identical to TruePoindexter's ,however, after a dozen or so drops I dropped the engine from a STD 260 to a STD 250 for a bit more armor. The speed change isn't large enough to really matter. Wangs should be escorting assault lances any who as an assault lance is a mediums best armor.

Yeah, but I'm with YaoYao. If you want a STD 260 with an AC/20, the Hunchback is better, and you would almost be better off at that point with a Cataphract 1X/2X with a 300+ STD. While it's nice shooting up and down hills with the YLW, I want the speed.

Sure the Hunchie and 'Phracts can do all those things better, however, can they do it rocking a metal mohawk?

Thats what I thought, Centurion FTW :p

In my opinion using an XL or a STD engine is how one prefers to play the mech or which role was assigned to the mech. This is especially true when playing in an organized group.

    - As a flanker / harasser / finisher you need the speed provided by engines with a higher rating, thus an XL should be preferred here. One wants to get in there fast, get some heavy hits or even killing blows to vulnerable mechs in and dissapear quickly again.

    - As a bodyguard for Assaults superior speed isn't needed that much. When walking with the big ones those will be the opponent's focus first anyway (well, in about 95% of the cases), so that the YLW can play some hide and shoot in the meanwhile.

In my view it doesn't really matter when pugging, as you can choose your way of engaging the opponent here anyway. I'd probably prefer the speed here as it might allow to get my ass out of trouble if the need arises.

So far I have found the STD engine (see True's build) works MUCH better in terms of increasing longevity.

I am going to be doing some more in-depth testing after I have finished playing catch up. I bought the Hero Mechs Friday morning when the sale went live and haven't really had a chance to play with the new STD that I put in yesterday.

The thing about the Hunch is that the Shoulder Mount is easily removable from almost any direction while the AC/20 in my arm can be protected much easier by rotating my body around.

We will see after a couple of hours of grinding YLW tonight. I've got all the BASICS done and am working on getting Elite now.

I 'm waiting for the Clan invasion when we can mount Clan-'Hawks that weigh half as much and rock twice as hard.

I think it depends on how you play. I find that when I get targeted, I turn my shield arm and run behind cover. Then they focus someone else and I turn around and go back into the fight.

Doing this instead of torso twisting forces them to attack our bigger mechs, and also lets me get full time-on-target to just pound them.

I run the wang with ac20 2 ml 5 tons of ammo with the XL 300. The speed makes it survivable and I can safely say I avg 300 to 500 dmg a match staying in the brawler/harasser role. It's a beast of a mech in the right hands

    My Wang is pretty standard...

I run standard engine in CN9 series usually, they live much longer. for want I have to say it is the big gun for me. AC20 is a must (or I will run other variants instead) Wang is build for AC20, or dual UAC5. If you are using something else there are better variants. I us AC20 + 2x MLas. It works fine, really.

    ONE IMPORTANT THING:

    [size=18pt]PAINT YOUR WANG ALL BLACK.

Yes, your hear me. The reason is that having it black would hide the classic pattern on the wang. When people see those distinct pattern they will know to shoot your arm first. Being less obvious allows you to get closer, and even when that tag is on when targeted they are less obvious than the glowing red and white pattern.

    Over my dead body.
I hear what you say, but I paint my mechs to be purple and beautiful, not invisible.

honestly, Rather than black, I've seen people going all Basic Green. they stealth right into the ranks of freshly purchased mechs and can sneak up on ya with it. Though, I fully agree with Epikt, I want my mechs to have personality and stand out, not be drab.
