can't believe it took you this long to get the new XCOM. You'll get sick of it after 2-3 playthroughs because you'll learn how all the enemies agro and it ruins the fun of the game, but yeah, fantastic game and one of the few re-imaginings that can compare to the original microprose game.
when i wanted to buy the game, i already read about the Expansion Pack, so i waited for a Complete Edition. And now here it is.
Allrite, you wanna do a Classic Console List? Let`s start with my first console ever, the NES. Wait, before i tell you something wrong - while all you suckers played with that big fat monster biatch, i got the Original sexy slim SNES-like Famicon Version from Asia, which was ten times greater than the US trimmed Edition, because you could upgrade the Famicom with an optional Floppy Disk System or even a Network Module. (ok, i didn`t buy those.. but was awesome for that time) Besides it had a better technical internal setup with less bugs etc. btw. i had a Black Version. Here is my Top20 List for the NES/Famicom with all the greatest games i played like nuts when i was a little child: 1. Mega Man 2 2. Kid Icarus - F that game. I remember throwing my controller so many times because the last level(s) (I'm blocking it out because it was so painful as a child) were seriously IMPOSSIBLE. +1 for double dragon and castlevania. I remember every one of those except for Batman and Gargoyles.
Have to admit the NES was a bit before my time, but I played Gargoyles Quest for the Gameboy and it was a awesome game!
my list is awful. 1(actually a japan-only PS1 game which only managed to make profits like, 15 years after it was released) - Panekit. they've managed to create an open-ended world about the size of GTA:SA in it, as well as aerodynamics including ground effect - and even with completely non-linear gameplay, it managed to create a sense of progression(even with me not knowing japanese to this date). 2 - Raptor: Call of the Shadows. pretty generic top down rail shooter, but had awesome graphics and the most fluid mouse control i've ever seen in a game ever(apparently they achieve it through an invisible cursor). 3 - Fallout 3(not because of the "first-play epicness" factor(although it did achieve that), but because of the sheer amount of completely unnecessary-to-progression structures and cities in the game. the main campaign felt way too linear though:-/). also, it simply made me learn i don't need to remember names AT ALL. 4 - Unreal Tournament. IMO the first true competitive arena FPS(and pretty much the first real moddable one). id software and valve both got close to reaching it, but ended up messing up the balance of a specific weapon(rocket launcher/gluon gun). 5 - Elasto Mania. 'nuff said. X-moto is too fast-paced to even remotely make to the list. 6 - Speedster/Rush Hour(depending on where you are from). a rather misleading cover/title, but they nailed the perfect arcade racing car handling. 7 - Magic Carpet 2(haven't played the first one) - 3d destroyable terrain in 1994. that, and re 8 - GeneRally. while it doesn't have the best arcade car handling, it has probably the best car balance in any racing game i've seen. 9 - Tachyon: The Fringe. cheesy campaign trying to advertise the same game as 2 different ones(while you actually have the same campaign except for several missions and a weapon unique to each side), but introduced the slide maneuver to mainstream space combat games. 10 - Space Station 13. i simply can't figure out a way to describe it in only a paragraph - you have to play it for at least 15 rounds to even get a grasp of what it's about. 11 - Papers, Please. it manages to tell a story without you even having to take part on it - and it works. 12 - SWAT 4(the original version). it's one of those games where winning through trial and error simply doesn't work at all. 13 - Ground Control(the first one) - not only it was the only RTS game i ever managed to get remotely good at, it's limited unit mechanics make tactical decisions much more important than outright zerg/tank rushing nearly other RTS does. 14 - GunZ: The Duel. broken mechanics, emergent gameplay, community fully abiding sturgeon's law. and i love every single bit of it. 15 - Uplink. best videogame cruelty to NPCs ever conceived. 16 - Battlefield:Bad Company 2. as a shooter, it sucks bad. as a way to get laughs off a shooter, it's hilarious. 17 - Mechwarrior 3. not only they had heat wave menu effects on dx7 and an actually useful campaign intro cinematic, they also taught a very simple game design rule many people simply ignore: you don't create a shooter videogame by taking rules from a tabletop game and implementing them to the letter(or almost to the letter), EVER. 18 - Sniper Elite(doesn't matter which one, but IMO the first one is better). reasonably boring campaign(but justified in you being a sniper after all), teaches a game design lesson: difficult spikes at the end of a level(in sniper elite's case, aimbotting and wallhacking snipers) are bad in non-arcade games. 19 - Dark Orbit(the wildtangent game) - a game i NEVER found after i played its trial version. they eventually "discontinued" it(as in took down all copies from the internet and made all registration codes invalid) - which is a shame because unlike most wildtangent games, this one actually had some real polishing in it. 20 - Dark Orbit(the bigpoint game) - it's a clearly bad game(complete BS excuse plot, crappy mechanics, horrendous power creep(what would get you killed in 3 seconds 3 years ago now gets killed in 3 seconds) and yet still manages to gather bucketloads of money for some reason), but i love it because it foreshadowed how horrendously freemium would get abused as a cash-grab, way, Way, WAY before zynga made farmville. it's a game you actually get to enjoy more the smaller the playerbase is, sadly. Eventually they managed to REMOVE the only competitive non-premium ship straight out of the game.
My favorite Console after the SNES was definitely the XBOX 1, while most of my friends bought/played the PS2 at that time. I never could get into console games. I tried too, because my sons loved them, though the were split between XBOX and PS2. Great platforms for fighting games, and anything that had a custom controller (Steel Batallion), but for FPS, or a so called sim, an XBOX or PS2 controller is more than a step away from intuitive.... at least for an old fart like me
