Did something similar early on with a 2 C-ER PPC Kit Fox right after using the same setup in my Nova with a lot more heat sinks. I don't even have the excuse of allergies or indeed any excuse at all.... my first ever heat death. Not like I had any upgrades on it so I should have been being careful.
Recent embarrassing death: Sunday. Running with two friends, the Don being one of them. My death: The Don wants to test out his COM-1B NARCer. So I take a BLR-1S LRM Boat. We drop on Canyon Network Skirmish, and there's a fellow 'Speccer on the OpFor. Our team starts pushing right from the 5 line towards A3, B3. I take a few shots at some hard locked targets, but for the most part when NARC hits something I am out of range as I was lagging behind with a Dire Wolf. We stop at the B4 bridge and back up and around to B3 heading to catch up. Problem is, I'm being run down by at least a lance of Clan Mechs that *will* outrun me. My Dire Wolf ally? Uses me as his decoy to get away while I am murdered by the rest of their team. Rest of our team? I think they were in the D2, E3 area. Couldn't tell you, I was murdered so fast. Scored a whopping 55 damage, but hey... Our team still won? Whee. Moral of the story: Stick with the main force of the team in the direction they are going and worry about shooting things when you have backup. The Don: I have to post this one since he likely won't. Same two mechs, actually the previous game. Our group is good and ready, but he has to rotate laundry, I think. Go AFK in any case. Not a problem with our launch times so far. He launches, and while AFK, we get a short search time. River City Night, Skirmish. Our lance ends up in E3. Everyone connects quickly, so we are moving before the Don gets back. Our lance is only in E4 when the message, "So and so killed Don Zappo." It's only a few seconds after that when Don is back on Comms. *Any* other map or starting location, or even a longer search time before drop, would have likely let him live. Nope, the most open starting location on that map.
I will confess that I left a few people to die in my DWF But in fairness...they all were suiciding at the time, nothing I could have done. However, I had my single worst game ever yesterday...Alpine Peak, Skirmish. My lance and I start at the furthest point away from Sniper Hill (L9), but we're a reasonably fast lance, so we can get to the group. As I get up to J10, something is wrong...no one is on the hill, and most of the others are walking past me going towards the L9 spawn. Along with 3 others, I tell them to take the hill at I10, and power past...I see a couple arrows turn, but in watching the video later, I didn't notice them turn back away from us. 4 of us take the hill, and immediately I'm playing Whack-A-Mole with a Spider-D who's on top of the biggest G9 peak, and I'm lighting him up...when suddenly I see a LOT of seismic. Their entire team is on top of us. 4 of us. Where is the rest of our team? L6 and 7, spread out in a giant, long line. I barely realize this when a Jenner and Ember hop on top of me, though I manage to kill the Spider just before I die. The other 3 hill people aren't lucky. Got to spec the entire team as they are killed one at a time from behind...half of them didn't even turn around to try and return fire. The entire time, the four of us who knew what we were doing are screaming "THEY ARE BEHIND YOU TURN AROUND!!!" to no avail. I just logged out for an hour...nothing was worth risking being on that team again.
Yeah my evening yesterday was like that both when I was soloing and then duoing..... Near the end the pair of us started deliberately leaving a few minutes after each match to try to escape a certain 10 man team.....
Honestly, since I play during the (US) overnight hours since I work the graveyard, I've been running into people who are absolutely awful at the game lately. Had a Tourmaline match last night where the entire enemy team was just standing still while I fired lasers into them. I dueled a trial Shadowhawk that could not target with its PPC/AC5's to save its life, took it from full health to dead at 400m without being hit once. My teammates were just as bad, standing in plain sight and just absorbing enemy fire. If you've never played the late night playerbase, I doubt you have truly seen the depths of noobidity to which they aspire...and the worst part is, it gives me bad habits...since I can just sit still and get 800+ damage without being hit once, I suddenly find myself against good players randomly, and it catches me by surprise when they know how to play. Urgh... Edit: Gonna be honest, it's really turning me off of the game fast to just get thrown into match after match with complete mongs. Just had a team on Tourmaline go from winning 6-1 to losing the match. Why? Because we got a huge lead, then everyone ran off in different directions, and three people went AFK midmatch. The match before that was on Caustic, watched the entire team turn in circles over and over, milling around in a panic while the enemy force surrounded us completely and won in a minute or two flat. It's just too bad...I still remember my first days piloting mechs, and I know I did better than that from day one. The Tourmaline game, I did 800 damage with 5 kills and 5 assists by the end...#2 was 130 damage. This is starting to really suck ass.
You mean one of the 12 man or 10 man units farming the group queues? (6 of 10 battles this evening)
Two problems, one being that I play during everyone else's "off" time, and the second being that you don't meet team players when you can't ever run into them. I would play with a couple friends, but when being in a 2-man group can match you up against a 10 or 12-man group, that makes the odds of losing even higher. Honestly, it's just disappointing that the only options are "risk getting stomped by a 12-man and have no chance" or "risk getting 11 complete mongs and have no chance". If you don't get lucky and get the smarter side, you just get hosed either way...
Sigh...another aggravating one on Forest Colony. Our team gets rushed from behind as half go cave, and the other half camps spawn. I'm trying to get my DWF to the fight...when the screenlock bug hits, and I crash to desktop about 15 seconds later. I reconnect just in time to get blasted, zero damage. Grumble...
I think my story can fit in this topic since we're speaking about those 12 men roflstomping morrons. Games is on River City, i'm taking my "Let's help old ladies crossing the street" Kit-fox (understand 3AMS + ECM), i run with some mates in a group of 10-12 Steiner. We finished loosing it like 7-12. Those guys spammed us with arty/air strikes. The game finishes with me alone, then i decided to overheat myself to death. My reasons : -I don't want to give XP/money to people abusing the system because they don't deserve it. -Loosing 7 people when spaming arty and being coordinated, well sory but they suck at this game and are here just for some E-peen farm, m'kay, FU you don't deserve to kill me. It's embarrasing for me because i'm the kind to not blow myself up to deny a well deserved kill, and i'm the kind to want fair and balanced games, even if for me honor and this kind of stuff is bullshit, but i can't suffer people abusing a shitty system for pure e-peen farm. I know i'll sound like a moron to some people, but honnestly that's my feeling.
You DO know that suiciding still gives them cbills/exp for the assist, right? Perhaps even more than they would have gotten for the kill?
You only have the XP for the amount of damage you dealt, and the C-bills gain is fixed. Anyway my goal is only to deny them that extra +1 for their K/D
I have exactly the same problem, after the clans hit with some decent fights now i'm getting matched with complete morons like 60-70% of the time. It's frustrating both when your team plays like monkeys on crack and when you get inferior enemy players. It just makes you pick up bad habits. Playing in a duo and getting a 12man is also completely stupid. I think they broke the matchmaker in some way when introducing new rules.
No I think you'll just find that units now have enough active players again to regularly run 10 or 12 men. Most stick to the 10 to almost guarantee having a huge advantage in any match.
Witnessed another great one tonight...our team was losing on TT, and I was speccing our last guy as a Locust is absolutely tearing him apart...when suddenly, the LCT stops moving so fast, and our last guy (a HGN) tears him apart. Durandal: Heh, did you just leg yourself? Player: Uh...oops. Those hills can be a bitch
Another one for the list...call this an embarrassing kill too. I'm playing the DWF-B "Valar Morghulis" build on Frozen City Night, and doing well, but a Spider is just harassing me. I turn and he missteps, walks right into a building, and I excitedly charge my Gauss then Alpha, and I have him dead to rights. Right up until one of my teammates speeds around the corner right on front of me with a Firestarter. Instant TK as 2 LBX20's, 2 ERMLs, a ERPPC, and a Gauss all hit him dead in the cockpit at point blank. The Spider player was laughing so hard, he couldn't even see, and died shortly after...and I had to apologize to a very dead Firestarter, who did kinda understand as he went directly to my spec when he died
That has nothing to do with them sucking and has everything to do with you lacking coordination and spatial awareness. If you can deal with PPC/Gauss/LRM/etc, then you can absolutely deal with arty/air strikes. I most frequently use the strikes as an area denial weapon where an enemy or group of them are kept at bay or are herded into my teammates' fire, lest they get pummeled by the strike. Give them two choices, make them both painful. But there's no chance in hell I'm going to let a clumped up group of boaters sit there unscathed, either, and they'll get the strike right at their feet.
