You guys are partially correct. From some recent research, 7 of the hero mechs come from some part of the lore, at least by name. From reading the 3025 Tech Manual, I found four listed here, in addition to the Death's Knell and Pretty Baby, there is also the Boar's Head Atlas and the newest hero, the IV Four Quickdraw. At least, these are the ones listed by name that I can find. No mention of the armaments here, so that particular part was more than likely made up by PGI, for good or for ill. On Sarna.net, there is a listing of the loadout for Kerensky's Orion, which the Protector duplicates fairly accurately, at least in content, with the technology currently available. Yen-Lo Wang (from the novels) is of course slightly different than normal, the hatchet in the canon loadout is actually a Wolverine-esque claw on that hand, but I doubt we'll see either unless PGI decides to implement physical attacks, though I am surprised that they did not add any other armament to replace it. Finally, Heavy Metal is only partially mentioned, the pilot is an established character but the name of the mech is not listed and the armament only partially corroborated by the novels. I initially thought that the Misery was supposed to be the mech piloted by J. Elliot Jameson of Wolf's Dragoons, but the loadout listed by Sarna doesn't match up. I'm kinda on the fence about the creation of new non-canon hero designs. Most of the listed "Notable Mechs" in the Readout do not have a specific armament listed, so they could draw from those and still use unique loadouts instead of totally making things up. This would not entirely be canon but have some link back to the established material. I will agree that some of the background stories created from scratch can be a bit laughable, but in at least a couple of cases (Ilya, Dragon Slayer) the loadout, or at least the hardpoint arrangements of these heroes have proven to be fairly useful. I had hoped the Banshee hero would be Vandergriff's jump-capable model from the novels, but it was too close to the S models and also kinda treads on Highlander/Heavy Metal territory. The Blackjack does make sense for a future hero mech, as the BJ-2 variant from the 3050 readout would be tailor made to stay in the canon while still providing a unique hardpoint configuration, though they may have to go slightly off-book to use the established hero story which comes from 3025. I would personally vote for the Thunderbolt or Battlemaster myself, not sure what I would put for their loadout though...lol.
By preference I'd prefer canon mechs/pilots but if they have an interesting story it doesn't bother me. Its the awful mechs with bad stories and non canon that really irritate me. Huggin I'm looking at you.....
Hmmm... someone knows where I get the idea from. Although I don't care about the stock equipment, more than likely I would rip out the stock stuff without even playing it once and throwing my stuff in. Well, at least throw in DHS if it is not standard, cause SHS are for lowlifes mostly and does not deserve to be on a mech (with a few exceptions). For this one you upgrade the DHS and Endo, add BAP, jack up the XL engine and off you go. Obviously move the ammo to something other than LT/RT. Oh you can fit FF in also if you need more ammo, but you would barely have any slots. If you really need it you can upgrade to LPLas with an XL225 engine, but you may have to give up on some ammo and/or BAP, not worth it. That, or 4x SRM6. 2x MPLas.
I just want to see a Mech with Ballistics slots in its legs. There's Canon mechs with machineguns in their knees, after all.
MG never have convergence issue, if you are that close everything will hit. In fact it would be better for a tall mech since you can hit the little guys easier. Oh, is that the Viking you are talking about, or something like that. My memory is rusty.
Or the Crusader with SRMs in the legs. Just imagine wading through hordes of Light Mechs, ripping their legs off without even having to aim...
It does drop several hard points for that privilege though from memory. Would personally like the AS7-S2 version. Lots of weaponry including a Heavy Gauss. Not happening of course in this timeline.
A Griffin-Hero with 2x high Torso Ballistic-HPs + Energy-Slots and no Missiles would be nice. Would be somekind of a heavier Blackjack and maybe even competitive against the Shadow Hawk.
Since they took their effort to make the worst Raven possible and the SDR-5V still exists in the game, I'm very mixed in my feelings for a hero spider now that you mention it.
Blackjack or Spider should be next. BJ could even be comparable to the BJ2. A Spider hero will have a tough time if it can't mount ECM.
Spider, Blackjack and Trenchbucket...erh...Trebuchet. Why? Spiders are fun and a Black Widow hero mech would be awesome! Blackjack because, well, -because- and Trebuchet to breathe some life into a 'forgotten'/neglected chassis. /CX
Problem is that Natasha Kerensky is the Black Widow and piloted a jet black Warhammer while captain of the Black Widow Company of Wolf's Dragoons. No spider of that name for you! http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Natasha_Kerensky
