We've all had those moments in game when something has happened like you accidentally PK a friend on comms in a close battle. In this case I never even made it into game before wincing visibly. I guess no words are necessary but the sacrifices I make for House Davion CW...

It probably glitched somewhere and put multiple things into the same slot. Two or three engines, for example. Yes, that happens.

For me it is the terrible UI. Every menu you go through, when you go to buy something or save, the box pops up asking if you're sure, and Ok is ALWAYS HIGHLIGHTED. Why can't we just hit enter to accept? That's what enter is for. Hit enter to accept, hit escape to get out of there. Standard UI features since we were scraping dinosaur shit off our driveways. Why can't these be implemented?

    Boggles my mind.

Actually Cancel is what is highlighted. But you are right, the UI sucks. The UI is probably the worst thing in MWO, and that's factoring in the horrible balance issues, the "you must do this build" quirks, and the god-awful hit registry.

Why can't I see the whole mech while editing it?
Why can't I buy stuff in bulk (I bought a bunch of mechbays while they were on sale...one at a time...)
Why can't I see my XP and GXP in every pane?
Why can't they make the icons different colors, use bigger text, and/or make the icons more distinguishable in some other way?
Why can't I filter for more than weight class? Why can't I custom filter equipment? Why can't I filter ammo by those applicable to my build?

There's probably a lot more, but those are the big ones.

Its correct and yes @Remover of Obstacles has it. ;)

    Endo/DHS, a 4.9m 300XL engine, radar/LPL cooldown/LPL Range/ML range modules and a basic fit.....

300XLs are so expensive, but they're my workhorse engine. Griffons, Wolverines and Shadow Hawks all use them.

Because his comments seem to have nothing to do with my post perhaps......

I think most of what he pointed out makes me wince, so perhaps they do have something relevant to add to this thread. :p

I agree... Most of the UI flaws he pointed out ARE very accurate. The UI is very clunky and designed to funnel you in to spending money not facilitating any kind of user experience. I know very little about game design but as a player this is something I would never allow out in to production if I were King For a Day.

Your post was about things that make you wince. The UI is what makes me wince, and that's why.

It had nothing to do with your post's content, but rather the question in the title.

Michael, it's not game design, it's graphic design. And whoever designed this should not only be fired, but banned from the industry.

The whole thing that makes me wince about UI is that it seems like PGI hasn't learned from the many mistakes made by Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Google and other companies that put out popular (as in lots of people use it, not that it is garnering rave reviews :p) programs. An example of a mechlab done right is Smurfy's. Clear, compact and concise, it contains almost all the information you need (missing only the modules I think, and some info) to make a mech quickly and properly.

PGI will hopefully get around to it though, they have absolutely been on the ball since their freedom from IGP.

I would agree to them getting a severe paddling and then made to fix it.

First things that came to mind were of a similar vein: one, when I see 3/4 of the assault lance AFK for 30 seconds at the start of a match, and know they will both die and complain about it, and second, when I look at the map and see a name I don't recognize running off to "scout" for us. 90% of the time, instead of it being an experienced light pilot who knows how to do that safely, it ends up being some jackoff who engages 3-4 mechs, then bitches at how the team didn't save them.

Edit: And a third, Terra Therma. You know when I wince.

Yeah, I hate when I'm in an assault and the lighter mechs leave me behind.
Or when I'm in a non-assault and the assaults don't spearhead the fight.

When the assaults move forward, the team can (and should) move forward. But the assaults need to move forward, and the team needs to follow.

Heh, I always grin when I'm in my DWF though, and some assaults start complaining about being left behind when I'm at the head of the pack. If I can keep up in my DIRE WOLF, then you can keep up in your (insert mech here)...

I completely agree on the "scout". Mr. Pro-Dies-Quickly often times does whale and whine about how the team wasn't with him when he died etc. I see this a LOT in CW matches. Unless you know what you are doing, and REALLY know what you are doing, don't. Stick with the group like a good lemming. Get your practice in non-CW matches, get good and then come back and lead the charge.

Honestly, when I first started scouting I was horrible but I took the time and learned how to do it on my own time in solo matches. Any idiot can pilot a Jenner with SSRMs and mash buttons but to move and fight like a scout takes some skill and that has to be learned not bought.

A large part of it is that scouting is generally useless.

There's no C3 system needed, targets are shared by whoever has them. So you don't have to dedicate scout mechs to getting targets.
The maps are tiny. Even the CW maps have very few places for attackers to actually come. For many maps you can see clear across at least half the map. Forest colony (and snow), river city (and night), viridian bog, crimson strait, caustic valley, tourmaline desert... and to a lesser extent Alpine, though it's big it has no cover.
Everyone takes predictable routes. C4 hill in Viridian. Nascar around the citadel in river city. Nascar around the crater in caustic. Pile up in the bridges on terra therma. Climb the I9 hill on Alpine. Crimson is one of the few maps that actually sees occasional choice: saddle, tunnel, or around in the city. The rest of the maps have spots that give too much tactical advantage to the team that claims them, so clashes have to happen there.

Which leaves NARCing as the one thing scouts can do to be useful. TAG requires you to hold the laser on the target, it's just suicide. It's a hell of a lot less useful if you don't have tons of LRM chuckers on your team. So for solo drops, why scout? Take a skirmisher, be effective.

Now, if you're grouped with a bunch of LRM folks, well, take a dual-narc kitfox or something sure. But don't try it in solo queue.
