I promised ;) here's how the end of the match looked, starting when I tried to go up The Hill to snipe and everyone died ><

Fascinating. I've embarrassingly never tried fighting off that roof as I find myself against heavies etc usually near the end so want to hit cover fast.

I'm actually most comfortable up there, mainly because there are so many buildings to hide behind, and I can plop down a hole if I need a quick getaway (hopefully not into the view of an enemy assault). There are also a TON of invisible walls that, once you are aware of them, make great protection.

I never know how people find those. I've noticed the ridiculous ones under HPG ramps but thats it.

Part of it is that I used to make maps for a lot of games...there's still some good UT and CS maps floating around that I made. I made a ton of maps for Jedi Knight 2 as well, and have even begged to be given the map tools for MWO time and time again so I could fix things for them (for free). There are a lot of things that you start to pick up on in terms of design that are easy to pick out when you see maps in other games. The worst part is that most of the invisible wall bugs that exist in the maps are a result of lazy mapmaking, mainly from setting boundaries on obstructions that exist wider than the item itself. It's used to keep things from clipping through the terrain, but done wrong, results in the invisible walls. HPG is the biggest offender (give me 10 seconds, and I could fix it!), but the cranes on Crimson have some pretty bad ones too. You also see a lot of offenders on maps like Canyon Network if you look closely, a lot of the lips of the various ledges have an area that extends a bit above the ground that will catch rounds/beams as they are fired.

Any time they release a new map, I run around with a light firing lasers randomly until I figure out what areas are danger spots in terms of interrupting fire. I can say that Bog is actually pretty good about invisible walls in most places, but Mining Collective also has some very bad spots. HPG, naturally, remains the single worst map for invisible walls (there are about 13 areas with major ones, the best known one being the middle pillars.

I don't know the under ramps areas on the sides where lights can stand with impunity is fairly blatant even for a pilot like me who doesn't go looking for them. Nothing like being unable to damage a light at 50m as he stands there unmoving firing with full effect into you....

The ramps are, indeed, another spot...but the pillars in the middle get the "worst" vote because of how far out the invisible walls extend. Again, it's a 10-second fix...but good luck convincing PGI to let me do it :p

This doesn't count as Last Man Standing, but it DOES count for Saved the Day...so screw it!

River City Assault, I'm in my Thunderwhat Hellbringer (Wub wub wub), and it's obvious right away that we are screwed. Half our team splits off to do a base rush, the other half base camps, and the enemy team just rushes through the defenders. I'm doing an end-run around that big center building as this happens, and end up with 4 teammates hitting the back of the enemy team, but it's obviously not working. They are already capping our base, it's almost at 25% capped, and I'm taking a LOT of fire, so I start moving around. As I do, I catch a mech with an alpha in the face and he just disintegrates. I stop taking fire, so I'm heading back towards our cap. As I get there, I see a 100% fresh Centurion turn its back on me, so he eats and alpha and goes crit orange in his CT...perfect shot, didn't even spread the damage :D

As I get to the base, things don't look good. The Cent is there, as is a Warhawk and a Stalker. The Warhawk lights me up, but eats an alpha too, and I vanish behind a building before I can eat more damage. Seeing that my team has started to cap the enemy base, I just go balls out crazy and charge our cap to go into a 3v1.

Not good, but I just want to delay their cap if I can.

I lead in with an alpha on the Warhawk, and notice two things as I wait for target info: he's suddenly not interested in firing back, and the Stalker is not moving. Holy hell, he's AFK! Seconds later, the WHK data loads, and I realize my two alphas have turned his CT cherry red, but he's keeping his back to me...so I decide to have some fun. I fire a couple MPLs at the cent, and sure enough, the Warhawk hears the wubs and turns to get in a quick shot. Oops, sorry, I still have 4 left ready to fire! Warhawk eats them and explodes.

Cent is trying to do damage meanwhile, but his aim is all over the place for being at point blank range. I alpha his front CT armor away, then accidentally overheat firing a second burst, but it kills him. Now there's just a Stalker.

I turn and start whittling him away, and just as he realizes what's happening, I strip everything but a single MLas off him. He's desperately trying to fire, but it's too late...just before I can kill him, my teammates cap the enemy base. We were 4 mechs vs. 8 by then, but we still won it, dammit.

All because a psychotic Hellbringer charged into his own base in 3v1 odds and won ;)

My goodness. What a match last night.
Pretty rough start for the team on Bog, but we rallied and were keeping the score pretty even. I was in my BJ-1X and running around different colors and either getting a kill or stripping something with every flank. The reds surge ahead leaving us with just me and a Kit Fox against a Jenner, Adder, Hunchback, and a Stormcrow. I retreat to our turrets as the KFX chased down the Jenner to kill him. He fell back towards me as I took some shots at some Mechs in the distance. Noticing the Adder on his heals, I swing toward and past the KFX and eliminate the Adder. Run back to the base and start firing in the back of the Hunchie. He's a swayback and I take off his wrong side (oops) and promptly take out the right one, followed shortly by his death. The KFX got taken out unbeknownst to me while this was happening, so I looked up and saw it was 1v1. Turned from where I had killed the Hunchie wondering where he was when he streaked out of the underbrush. I showed him my fairly undamaged side, turned after he fired and... he shut down. Right in front of me he shut down! So I took careful aim and ended the match.

Wow, I hate to only have 1 other post between mine, but it has been nearly a month.

I was just solo dropping, leveling my Wolverines, really just only sorta playing. My team decided not to move much and we pretty much just sat in the buildings close to the base. I was providing support with my LPLs, hitting things that showed themselves. Eventually they started coming across via the bridge. I kept mobile, hitting form one area and then the other. The score stayed pretty constant. I started taking pot shots at an Atlas, took out his front armor pretty handily, then he took my leg and a Treb charged my position. I fell back behind a building while targeting the Treb, noticed he had a red CT. I just poke out and hit him with my mediums.
I then sat there, expecting my death. I was swivelling back and forth, and spotted a legged Wolverine with his back toward me. I fired as I targeted and then his info appeared. I blasted through his leg in one alpha. Then I started moving, as I saw 3 enemies headed to our base. I spotted that Atlas from before and took him out before he was able to retaliate.
There was one friendly at this point. I managed to move into LOS of the base just as a Hunchie steeped in. I alpha'd and it killed him; no idea how damaged he was. That left 2. They were focused on the friendly while I slowly made my way toward them. They got him and I was able to see the damage on a Commando. He veered from my base and I took out his torso. All that was left was a Firestarter.
He kept trying to pop out of cover and strafe me, but I could give more than he could. So he started taking out my turrets away from where I could reach him. He had 1 minute and I showed no signs of wanting to follow him. He popped out to hit me once more and I killed him.
To recap, Treb, Atlas, Wolverine, Hunchback, Commando, and finally Firestarter all on one leg.
I was getting a lot of support from my team. One that stood out was: "You do Wolverine pilots everywhere proud." The funny bit is, I still consider myself a light pilot.

And then I got nominated for president. o_O

This is my basement ELO story of heroisim. I was the last person on my team as a Raven-3L versus a DWF, TBR, Golden Boy, and 2 Jenners. Fortunately, they were fairly damaged and didn't play that well. They left the DWF by himself and I was able to kill him with a few peep and pops. He did manage to get a bearing on me before he died, so I expected his friends to come back. So, I went off to the side and hid behind some rocks to wait for their arrival. Sure enough, they come rolling in and I snipe the Golden Boy that I had heavily damaged before. I also manage to kill one of the Jenners as he gets a bead on me. I run off with the remaining Jenner and TBR in pursuit. I head out trying to separate the Jenner and TBR and it works. The Jenner could've been more aggressive in trying to brawl with me, but for whatever reason, he wasn't. After some initial skirmishing, I managed to lose him and loop around to shoot him in the butt for the kill. Shortly afterwards, the TBR rolls up late to the party with exposed torsi and it was 2 easy shots to finish him off. First 5 kill match and man, the 3L is great on Tourmaline.

  16. Pretty standard pug game. Some went water, some pushed up toward tunnel and some stayed home.
I was in a support Kit Fox (3xAMS w/ mods, ECM, 3xMPL, 2xMG). Ran around trying to provide cover for the assaults/heavies hanging out between base/tunnel entrance. Finally got a lance size ground that pushed up to our tunnel side and then stopped and had some fire exchanges with the middle of the map. At this point some of the enemy force is also going water.

An enemy Timber breaks cover and moves up toward our base and the heavy lance lights him up and takes out his LT before he gets behind cover. I follow him and manage to finish him off and then move behind a hill I thought was safe. Turns out the red team pushed quite a bit further through water than I thought. I take a bunch of glancing hits but get out of there and meet up with a Dragon that was heading to help out a guy near our base.

The Dragon and I don't make it in time before the friendly triangle blinks out. So the DRG keeps going down the path into the base and I circle around the hill to the waterside. Turns out the guy that died was fighting two and there was a Cataphract getting ready to ambush the DRG as he chased the other enemy mech. I came in on the Cata's side and was able to shoot out the LT that was damaged and found an XL. By that time the Dragon had finished the other mech and we only had four left on our team. I think they had six left at this point.

Our Atlas was out in the water, so I booked it over to him followed by two friendly triangles. We get there just in time to finish off a Warhawk before the rest of the enemy team shows up and all hell breaks loose. As the scrum starts breaking down, we are down 10-9 with an enemy Atlas and Firestarter in close quarters. The Dragon and I start shooting at the Atlas and I start feeling a greater appreciation for the Kit Fox being a low priority target. Just to my right I see some laser fire and spot a Spider (ERLL,2xML) nearby and flatfooted taking shots at the Dragon. I come up behind the Spider and start tearing away at the left torso. He takes off in a beeline for the Atlas as I keep the trigger down on the machine guns until the mediums recharge and I can finish him off.

At this point the Dragon made it around the boat either chasing or being chased by the enemy Firestarter and I am left being well within 270 meters of the Atlas after getting the Spider. Luckily the Atlas has been nicely mauled by AC5s and has a light red CT in addition to other damage. Alpha the CT and it gets very dark red. He twists and fires back. I keep on the machine guns and get in one more medium laser hit to finish him off.

I glance at the scoreboard to see 11-11 and turn just in time to get shot by the Firestarter and I lose my arm and 2x MPL (might have been from Atlas, I don't have a great memory of matches and this is from last night). This puts us about even as the FS is missing an arm and has the other side torso and arm crit. We start circling and jumping and I am getting his side torso faster than he is getting my legs with what is left of his lasers. Then I run out of MG ammo. Now he starts catching up. I manage to get spread the damage on both legs fairly well and manage to get a few good shots with my only remaining MPL to finish off the engine. gg.

Thanks to the team. A lot of the mechs were damaged heavily or damaged in the right spots.

Just had this little match in my Panther 8Z...it ended with me vs two mechs, a very crit SCR and a Stalker 4N with an LRM build instead of the normal LLas one (which would've wrecked me). I played keepaway and managed to slowly crit them out, and ended up like this:

Posting the video onto Youtube now, I'll add it in later ;) Build was 2 LLas, 1 MLas, XL250

Action starts around 5:20, I'm mainly sniping before that ;)

  19. So snuck in a game before dinner. Got my kill and assist pretty early and was chatting with my seven year old daughter as she searched for an art project and we made plans for the library. We cleaned up a lance and pushed toward mid.

More shooting (Yes, an iPad cover or pillow would be great)

Circling middle, guys are dropping on each side. We are down on points so might as well try to get a few more kills. (Explaining why I like the robot shooting game.)

Lost my RT and my last teammate.
Came down to me with no ammo and 2 MPL against a centurion with SRMs and medium lasers. I start coring out his CT and he is pretty much shooting CT too. (Let's play Skylanders after his game.)

Then he lands a solid alpha on my arm, stripping the armor and leaving a nice light orange color. So I start shielding my arm and my only remaining weapons.
I get in a few more shots and slowly, very slowly get his CT down to red. He bugs out and runs away.

I chase after him and get a solid hit through his back armor and finish him off. Victory screen.

Sweet, 1k game.... and they were at 748... huh.
