I think Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the Star Wars prequels are about the only things I've ever seen nore disappointing than that play.
It's even worse when you figure they ran that pic slant instead of giving the ball to the best power rusher in the NFL. The guys who's back you rode to the Superbowl. The guy who just got 4 yards the play before. That was not the time to get cute - that was the time to hit the middle again and make them stop you three times.
I just listened to my daughter (pictured to the left) explain to her mother that if they Seahawks had just handed the ball off to Lynch instead of passing they would have won the superbowl. Even a 9 year old girl knows the right call in that situation.
On the contrary, the play call may have seemed odd, but there certainly was reasoning behind it even if you do not agree. The Patriots D was able to hold Lynch down to just over 100 yards which is damn good of them. Could he have done it? more than likely. Was there risk of them stopping him twice and letting the clock run down? yes. If they had stopped Lynch on the first attempt, they would have 1 more attempt at running the ball, plus a pass attempt. They decided to go for the pass first and sneak it in, but Butler had been practicing to counter that very play all season. He may be a rookie, but he was there to do one job and he did it VERY well. Anything other than an interception would have meant an immediate 2 attempts at running the ball with Lynch. Simply unfortunate. Everyone on the team is backing up RW and the coaches that it wasn't their fault. Even Lynch responded to press, unheard of right, that "It's a team sport" and acknowledged it's not just about him. I'm a huge Hawks fan, but I ain't even mad. SB50 BABY!
The best argument/criticism I have heard is why didn't they run first, then have the option to run or pass afterward. But if that had failed the first attempt, they only had 1 TO left and not much time to screw around and get 2 more runs, there would have to be a pass attempt in there somewhere.
Yeah. But I would have rather got my less risky option out of the way. Oh well, I guess there's next year.
