I wanted to make a build that maximizes the value of the blackjack's high arms by sneaking over the top and blasting people. Fitting the two 2x UAC5 onto this chassis without being too stupid or suicidal proved difficult but i think I think this build accomplished it. Cutting down to an XL 195 Saves you a ton and a half for armor and ammo and the requisite 2x Mlas for backup. Even fit a single JJ to allow cresting hills with wonky terrain. Look forward to comments, as I'm trying to make sure this is ideal before i spend the 3mil for the XL engine.
Welcome to mechspecs. Not many builds use a xl195, so I think you get better bang for your money with an xl200. While it does weigh an extra 1.5 tons over the xl 195, it also gets you an extra internal HS. Also, I would move the ammo from the legs into the arms. this way, when you lose a leg, you are less likely to explode.
Thanks for the welcome, and I definitely appreciate the advice. I still don't fully understand how ammo explosions function, does it not risk damaging the torso if it goes off? I assumed i just threw ammo in the legs cause ive been Leg crippled a total of about 2 times in 100 matches. Also i noticed that you placed your Mlas on the arms as well, Do you think that the extra height / flexibility on them is worth the risk of getting de'armed and left weaponless. I did do the math including the heatsinks for the Engine, In this build I'm essentially downgrading from a XL235 to gain an extra 1.5tons to play with, and giving up 13.3KPH In comparison to this the .5 tons I lose between XL195 & XL200 doesn't seem worth the extra 1.8KPH or is there something I'm missing? Also is there an exact science to distributing armor, im really not entirely sure how to prioritize
I actually have a 195XL sitting around from my Commando I had it mounted in. I'll give this a run tonight or tomorrow - first time I'll use a non-AC20 in this thing. EDIT: OH HEY question I can answer. Ammo can get crit when the component it's in gets damaged and doesn't have armor. If it does, it'll cook off and explode, doing the remainder of the ammo's damage to the component it blows up in and moving to another component (side torso ) if it overflows. It's really nasty when it happens, but doesn't happen too much in my experience. On the other hand, getting legged in my BJs doesn't happen all too often in my experience, so ymmv. EDIT2: Played 3 games. Conquest, Crimson, fell into a whole pile of enemies and died: 100 damage. Assault, River City, managed to prevent a base cap, 1 and 7 with 404 damage, survived til the end (with like 35% armor too). Assault, Mordor, 2 and 7 with 582 damage, ran totally dry of ammo and survived. I'm used to running the BJ with a 195 so the speed didn't bother me in the slightest - same with being used to running the BJ with an XL. The thing ran insanely cool all the time, which was nice. I'm not used to the UAC in the slightest (every time i've tried to run the thing i've hated it) but this is the closest I've come to not hating it so far. Tempted to try pulling the 2xML and swapping in 4xSL for kicks, but that'll be tomorrow.
Thanks for playing around with it a bit for me, right now I'm trying a bad version with low armor, low ammo a XL235 and 1 JJ and its pretty fun though I think it needs that extra ton and a half of space.
Have you tried double AC5s instead as well? Saves you some tonnage for something else http://www.mechspecs.com/forum/index.php?topic=2085.0
I did, and it worked reasonably well. But i really like the short term punch you get out of the UAC5 especially where you should be sneaking over hills to blast people short term. and can retreat when they Jam I don't actually seem to get blasted by LRM's that so i haven't felt the need for AMS which is what that build spends most of the the extra 2 tons on.
