Hey everyone, Walters here. I just wanted to say thanks for all the help and advice you've given me. I have decided to put an xl engine in my cicada and double heat sinks into my cataphract. I might end up selling the Blackjack because its just a bit to slow for me. But first I'm going to try out a couple new builds and see if I can make that mech better. Anyways thanks for all the help! I hope we can meet on the battlefield someday.

    Sincerely, Walters.

    Update

I just tried out one of the cataphract builds that subjectseven recommended.
I absolutely love it. Got 286 dmg. my first go around! That A C 20 is wonderful.

    Thank you Subjectseven!

I do it too, at long range it actually helps group your weapons. And for torso mounted mechs this would make your attacks more accurate by reducing unnecessary movements. Then again, I am leveling BNC, so arm movement means nothing to me.

    Thanks mate :)

Well, infact I just started playing MWO about 2 or 3 month ago... I had some vacation, I read very much (especially on mechspecs) and I am generally quite good at gaming/adopting, so I am probably not a "noob" anymore but wouldnt call me "vet" either ;)

I for myself had very good experience with doing some accounts, getting the cadet bonus a couple of times to try different mechs and different playstyles and learned quite much of it... I can only recommend that to anyone new who hasnt spent USD/MC already.
After all, the game is much more fun when you know that you spent your (very hard earned post-cadet) C-Bills on something that
    a) works in the current meta
    b) works for you

    +1
But I really hope PGI makes the arm-lock toggle a "real toggle" in the near future... Dislike the way it is handled atm.

Sorry if this is too much of a thread resurrection.
I've been around a while, but only just created an account to ask for some advice and, well, this thread seemed to be about want I wanted.
I've been a Light pilot since closed beta. I didn't expect to be, it just happened.
Lately, I've felt constricted by lights, and with 3/3/3/3 coming, figured it would be a grand time to begin branching out into mediums.
Now, I've foraged in that weight range before, with mixed results. I've had a bit of fun with one of the SHD variants and am looking to buy another medium chassis.
Pretty sure I've narrowed it to Wolverine/Griffin and was wondering what you gentlemen would suggest.
    Reasoning:
I don't like how BIG the SHD is. I adore JJ and really don't have fun without them. I like how the Wolverine looks and am a big fan of how quickly it can torso twist. I've never been a fan of how the Griffin looks, but everyone keeps telling me its' better. I don't see it.
I really want something pretty darn quick with a lotta punch to it. Something that could make an enemy swear seeing it come over a ridge.

I know, I tend to ramble.

    TL;DR
    Griffin/Wolverine or maybe another medium?

I'd say Griffin. I was really amazed by this mech, mostly because of its mobility. And overall it's a very nice mech to pilot, with powerful missile+energy combinations possible.
On the other hand, the Wolverine allows you more different builds over the 3 variants, which is always nice. Beware though, you'll have to grind a non-JJ variant.

Griffin over Wolverine. It's the most agile mech in the game as far as torso twist goes, check the stats here: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de

It can do 130 degrees, five more then the Wolverine. Other then that, Wolverine has one version without JJ's but also one version with Ballistics. The Griffin does not.

That's the ShadowHawk for me! High positioned Shoulderhardpoints for pretty Evil Sniperguns, either ACs, Gauss or now with the latest Variants even PPC or Lasers. You have JJs and some additional Missile Power. This is pretty wicked. Don't know why you have problems with this Chassis. Wolfies VS Griffons VS Hawks -> HAWKS win most times.

The sizes of the 55tonners are similar imo. So if you look for a fast and punchy Medium with JJs you can try the Blackjacks. They are fragile but AC20 or 5+ Lasers or 2x PPC are quite deadly if you like to skirmish more and brawl less, since you are a Lights Pilot. :)

BJ's are not that fast though? I've been playing them lately and apart from the X they all feel either too slow (engine size) or underarmored.

Shadowhawks, Griffins and Wolverines are all fun. In slightly different ways. The most versatile is the Hawk re hardpoint and placement (shouldermount), the most durable and twistable is the Griffin with all weapons on one side of the body, the Wolvie has the best SRM brawler...

It's flavour, all work well. :)

Yeah, except for the BJ-1X which is kind of a big light (fast and lots of lasers) the others are bound to be slow because of the engine cap. It does not means they're not fun though, I'm a big fan of the BFG build on the BJ-1. BJ-3 also makes a nice small PPC poptart.
And with the launch module taking tonnage into account they will be an even bigger asset to your team if you're able to achieve similar results than with a 55 toner.

(but not sure it's what MightyBolamite wants)

But the BJ is one of the few Meds which can load a BFG! And that with an XL235@darn 90+ kph Speed. Only the Hawk can do the same at similar speed & STD Engine. For 115+ kph take the 1X with a Superlaserbeam. 1K+ Scores is very possible! It is a very versatile & fun Chassis.

But for true Punchpower i recommend the ShadowHawk, but OP seems to not like it..

Actually lots of mediums can equip a BFG. Aside from the BJ: Hunchies, Shadowhawks, Yen-Lo-Wang and Trebuchet-7K (poor Trebuchet, nobody likes it :( ) can mount one.
Though the BJ-1 is in my opinion the best for the job despite its low tonnage, because its the only one both JJ capable and with the BFG on the arm.

What do you mean? I think the Wolverine may be able to jump, I guess.
Well, sure you can't AC20 in it, but a gauss is fine too.

    I assumed "BFG = AC/20".
(which is the only weapon that can be restricted - for all the other weapons, if you have the hardpoint and the tonnage you can equip it)
