OK, the design is great. And I first I thought the sound thing was fun. But after some weeks, I'm tired of it. When I'm playing a game, I need a feedback when I press a button. On this map, when I fire my AC/2s it makes "pouf pouf pouf", I don't feel the power of the weapon, I don't even have the feeling I'm firing. One thing I love with this game is how weapons feel powerful, when I destroy a mech it explodes and makes a big boom. But Manifold is like fighting in a fish tank, but with no bubbles. A game without feedback is not fun.
I like the map itself, but I agree at first the sound was kind of cool. Now I hate it. I didn't release how much I relied upon sound until that map.
I like the map, and the muffled sound. It's an attention to detail that I appreciate. Of course I take a page from my wifes book sometimes and play with the sound off.
I like the map, and some weapons definitely sound powerful on it. Like an AC20. Honestly, it adds to the immersion for me, which can make or break a game.
The design is great (except the walled in base caps which will not in a million years be used), the muffled sound is a bit annoying but it's also good attention to somewhat realistic detail, and I think the latter is why I still like it. Feeling as if you're really on a moon and having to rely on another perception of sound is better than just going with the star wars mentality of every laser in space makes a sound and explodes. Manifold is by far the most fun map in the bunch. Now Caustic Valley on the other hand, where everyone mindlessly ridgehumps and circles around the creater, or terra therma where (since you drop randomly) your build suddenly sucks if it has PPCs in it, not to mention being giant, THAT's annoying.
There's a nice mix of ramps, platforms, indoors which brings a lot of interesting approaches as to how you can play the map. Which I really like. And everything's mostly quite flat, so you're not getting clipped off random rocks. Some colour variation would be nice though, some added contrast in areas since it does blend into a murky blur. Especially with the overly clusterfuck micro detailing. As for the sound, I actually really like the muffled sound my own weapons make. Now the problem is, I can't hear when I'm getting hit. And that's pretty horrible. But something I can live with.
I love the map and love/hate the sound. i like the sounds being muted but the impact damage indication sounds need to be louder, i cant tell you how many times im getting hit long range with laseres of something and have no idea i have even been hit till i keel over dead. thats my only complaint, it just doesn't communicate hits well enough with the sound design on the map. otherwise i love it's lay out and design though it's a bit death star especially the little towers that look just like the tower turrets from the trench run scattered everywhere.
Hate it. It's more Thunderdome than Mordor, and that is saying something when I'd rather play on the volcano then that crappy little map.
I think they pulled off the "Thunder Dome" very well with this map. Even though it is one giant arena, it never feels like it to me. The cover on the map is great. Would be a really cool map to have king of the hill or a free-for-all mode
It is the only map where we get hard corners, ramps, edges and straight geometry throughout. It makes it very easy to be methodical and precise about how much of your mech to expose and planning where to push with good and quick exits. Beyond the different sound your own weapons make, I also really like that they developed the map to also drastically change how far sound travels. They could have muffled the regular sound track and said job done but they took the time to also change the distance sound travels. I quite enjoy not really hearing what the mech next to me is doing so I can fully concentrate on my own fight. Overall it is my favourite map right now and I am happy to see it everytime I get it. I am fairly biased though since I started 9-1 on the map and am now 17-5.
Definitely! I agree with you all about the design and geometry of the map. My rant is mostly about the sound.
It's a great map. The muffled sounds really helps with immersion, since no-one can hear you scre...ehh...shoot in space.
Well, I disagree. If I understand correctly you're saying it helps the immersion because the muffled sounds are, somehow, "realistic" - because there is no sound in space. It's commonly known immersion doesn't work like that. Try, for example, to watch Starwars with sound muted, that's way less immersive than the pew-pews. Both cinema and video games are very good examples that immersion does not care about realism. What create immersion in video games is the feedback the game brings you.
It's just another chess board for me. If there is anything I would hate, it would have to be the graphics engine. Even on HPG Manifold do I find instances when my weapons fire into invisible obstacles. I try to take my queues from ECM (or the lack there of) and my modules (Lock duration) to decide whether my mech has lost line of sight to the target or not, even though I can still see the other mech.
