I could barely afford the mechs and extras i have bought so far... and back then... at least it was spread out...so I could ..save up... to get the new stuff coming out.... but.... now they are rapid firing..so to speak, new mechs, the normal releases of new mechs..then there is the civil war set of mechs, new sets of hero IS and Clan mechs...all coming out in a very short time... ... hundreds and hundreds of dollars of new stuff in a short time...and...with new weapons..new builds.... making what measly set of mechs I have soooo very obsolete..I'm feeling it now...I used to kick ass on the battlefield..now my growing obsolete mechs...of which i really can't upgrade more to make them any better, are getting torn to shreds in no time flat.... anymore I just join a match to die.... and with the new skills tree they are sooo gonna put out soon if it works or not...is gonna make it harder to skill up a good stable of mechs I like to play.... that will do much damage to the new stuff coming out.... I know... if I played better I would do better... I should practice more.... become a better pilot...but all that is coming from someone that has like most the day everyday to play.... that has been playing way longer then I have... I may be just griping...but... I love this game.. but slowly getting phased out... so.... don't worry..I figure by the end of the summer...I will have had no choice but to uninstall the game.. and wish I had a better job, so I could afford to keep up... thanks for the time I have had playing thus far... hope all other enjoy the new mechs....and all that is to come.... ok done griping...back to your lives.....((just a rant... expecting negative feedback with this post... so... have at it))
Why would anyone rant at you? The sums of money PGI are asking for stuff are not trivial and I'm sorry to hear to you can't stretch the budget, and I'm pretty sure others will be too. I hope a well timed mech sale or two over time comes along to help you out and keep you going
I tried a pure F2P secondary account about 1.5 or 2 years ago. Grinded the cadet bonus and carefully choosed a Griffin 2N for my first own mech. Took part in all the events to get free stuff. I have to admit this is a lot of work and doesn't feel very good. Therefore my conclusion was that one should put at least as much as half a full title ( ~ 25 $) into this for a much smoother start. Some PT, additional bays and a hero mech of a chassis you enjoy help quite a bit in the beginning. I am pretty sure this isn't enough to deeply explore the game, but definitely keeps you in it for quite some time. Buying additional Mechs, fully equipping them and so on is a whole different story, though.
TBH I'm almost ashamed of how easily I threw money and time at MWO in the past and your opinion is very viable. The most important part at that point is not to care about being the absolute best (which is difficult to say the least in a competitive scene). You don't have the capability to devote all your time to training skills in a particular video game, so it's obvious you'll not be as quick to pick up skills as some others do. Nor should you invest money into having the latest-of-the-latest mechs, if your budget doesn't allow it and you don't need it (because you don't have to be 'the best'). That's true for any competitive online game. For example in League of Legends, only a handful of people actually earn money with streaming/eSports, and the majority of people will do it in their free time. Instead of that, focus on the parts you enjoy about the game and make the most of it. I guess a good part is that even the obsolete mechs with a good loadout are better than a new mech with a shit loadout. Try to ignore the new releases as much as possible and participate in events for Mech Bays. If you have spare money and spend enough time on the game that you think a purchase is worth it for your own enjoyment, then sure! Get whatever you want. And if the current skill system goes live, you'll be happy that you don't have 250 mechs to update. Also, it's no shame to take a break every now and then, I think the last period I played MWO was about 2 weeks long, about 10 months ago.
well, if you get frustrated with Online Games, take a break and maybe try some SP-Offline Games for a while just to get the Success Feeling to get pumped up for another cringe Match in MWO.
May I can ask which Mechs do you own? Like Excalibaard said - most of the time its not the Mech which is outdated, its the loadout. Only a handful of mechs might be considered as obsolete and mostly they have been on release due to a flawed design (bad hitboxes/hardpoints). Mabye we can help you to polish your garage? A well serviced oldtimer can sometimes be more reliant than the newest model stuffed with "fancy" electronics...
In the same vein, Kanajashi has a great F2P series on how to have fun in MWO without spending a dime. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDDTHQIxzvQ8eyONcWuGZRw
Actually i never had the feeling that my old Mechs (from 2+ yrs ago) were obsolete or outdated or useless. To be very honest - because of the grind (to master all new Mechs) i never got the time to take out my good old friends (i still love you Catapult C1 - you are still my first and best love in this Game! ) The point is - if you ever maxed out a Mech (all Variants), there is no big motivation to pilot them, unless you really never get newer Mechs. I still have dozens of Light Mechs that i never elited due to time (and my lack of patience to stay back in brawls! haha) If you get the feeling that the new releases don't give you the bang for bucks like in good old times, then just stop throwing out money. Spend it for some other games (Indie Projects in Steam) or just keep it. That's fine! I think i skipped 2/3 of the latest releases, when i almost bought everything 3-4yrs ago. I still could, but well, i could buy some cool hardware instead as well! Cool huhn?
I would say don't worry about it. You can do as you say you did before: save up. The mech packs will still be there, there's nothing to be gained by being the 'first' to have a new shiny. The older mech packs have more value to them, but the new packs pricing is cheaper, as far as lights and mediums go. The new 3060 equipment will be available to all the day of the patch, so you'll be able to get new toys for your 'old' mechs. With the new skill tree, quite a few older mechs have gained some new life. And as others have said, it's more about the loadout and your desired style of play than the mech itself. Make the most of your time in the game. Find a few friends and group up.
