That's pretty disappointing. Then again, they have a track record of making unnecessarily complex and weird design decisions, and had already developed this system whereas the linear systems that people suggested would postpone the skill rework even further. It was to be expected.
Long and short? No. In fact, I don't see myself purchasing any additional 'Mechs. Just tweaking the ones I have with the new equipment. The costs of the new skill tree, as they are, are just too damn high to bring all of my existing 'Mechs up to speed, why would I add new ones to my rookery? I think the new skill tree is going to disincentivize the purchase of additional 'Mechs. Especially for existing/ long term players. I also think that *individual* nodes don't really offer enough of a "boost" to feel appreciably different, so there is no reason to go wide instead of deep. And there really is no, "play style choices" in the skill tree. Because you have to have gameplay that actually supports a play style beyond just, "Core the Center Torso." Without actual meaningful play style choices, there is no reason to have different builds of the same 'Mech.
Nope. "..the new skill tree is going to disincentivize the purchase of additional 'Mechs." I am very disappointed in the respec costs not to mention that I will have less mechs outfitted than I currently have... That just feels wrong. Like I am being stolen from. (please correct me if I missed them removing respec costs in the one of PTS patches) Not sure how many mechs you guys use for MRBC, but that in itself might be enough for me to drop out for season 9. Currently it isn't a big deal to switch a few weapons and modules between games. Now I will have to grind more mechs. Let's face it, MRBC may be the most exciting thing going on with this game and the new system will be a burden to it. I am disappointed and uninspired to buy more mechs. Every mech I purchase would only make the summit of Mt. Grind even higher. P.S. Are they still going to use quirks to balance mechs?
My understanding is there will still be some quirks. Otherwise, it's going to be ugly for mech variety. I'm going to wait and see how it goes before deciding anything. I'll run a few mechs that won't have full skills and see how the grind feels. Definitely not putting any real money into the game for a while.
The respec cost is now 400 XP, instead of 125,000 C-Bills (per point). I agree that if my Mechs are not able to spend the XP I have already earned, it will feel like progress is stolen. If they were to make it so you need like 70,000 XP instead of ~56,000, that would be tolerable, because I could get all my Mechs that I've mastered to at least 80% and a lot of them to 100% right away. I may need to go back and spend a little bit of time to top them all off, but it won't feel like a reset. Locking my already-earned XP behind a paywall is a slap in the face.
Hey, I'd rather them take a flawed system and bench it than push it through no matter the cost. There were tons of issues people had with the skill tree system, from the basic design of it, to the balance of it, to the UI, to the costs on the players, and everything in-between.
I agree. It just bothers me that they got to "rolling it out next week" twice and didn't realize all the issues it had.
Have to admit I was sort of ok with the last build. Spent a lot of time on PTS and came round to quite liking the new system once they'd reduced the costs. Still don't like the engine decoupling as I like fast large engine mediums. Assaults were awfully clumsy on PTS and barely tolerable skilled up but that's rather what they should be agility wise.
