With a little rework, this design functions quite well: I've replaced two of the LPLs with large lasers, though you can use ER Larges if you wish. This gives you a bit of longer range punch, while also freeing up more tonnage for armor and heatsinks. If you want to stick with a smaller engine, costs can be kept down by repurposing one from a Shadow Hawk:
