Hello everyone, first post here so if i am doing it wrong let me know. I am fairly new to MW(O), i've been in the closed beta for a while but i have no real deep knowledge of MW mechanics (board or pc versions) other than what i've learn on the field. Now that we are in open beta and thus final wipe, i started thinking of a more long-term goal etc. Seeing how my nick has been Hunchback for the last 15 years or so, and the Hunchback mech seems quite versatile and deadly, i figured my first serious investment of time will be in one of those... Now i have been thinking of possible builds, more or less weapon configs than the rest. Here's my ideas and questions: The Hunchback is a medium mech, taking all that this implies i suppose it's best built around medium range with good maneuverability and tanking power. To me that translates to more or less medium lasers and/or srms. My first idea is to get a [HBK-4P] and equip with: * 2x Medium Pulse Laser - 1 at each arm, for close range-high speed brawling (In my experience pulse is very good for that) * 4x Medium Laser - mounted around the torso and shoulders, generally "group 2" to be used for alpha striking and precision stripping parts when you get the opportunity of shooting on a slow/immobile target. Not sure if you could fit more lasers, or even operate them without overheating in 1 shot. If possible, add more lasers, if not leave it like that. The rest of the build should be heatsinks and armour, sporting a normal engine hoping for some 60-70km/h. I am hesitating over this, as apparently Small Lasers are great in not building much heat and still packing a punch. However, i do believe that to properly use SL, you need to close in on a target fast, and the Hunchback is not a Cicada really. Second build is the [HBK-4SP], which seems a bit more versatile. I was thinking of something more general purpose, instead of precision cutting this time: 4x Medium Laser - To heat them up. 2x Streak SRM - To blow them up. 1x Small Pulse Laser - In the head slot, for those pesky super-fast-moving lights that are so hard to hit. Probably useless mostly, since 1 laser won't really kill anything anyway. Again, the rest should be ammo/case, heatsinks, armour. Not sure if any of those is really viable. Also, AMS - worth it or not? I didn't read anything about LMS being buffed, but since 2 patches back i am being wrecked by only a couple of LMS salvos, so maybe AMS is worth it? Thoughts?
Moving this to General Discussion as this is more a comparative discussion and not a specific mech build Welcome to the forums; I am sure some of the more knowledgeable guys can assist you. We've got a few members who really know their stuff!
Well Sir first I will show you what was shown to me.... This cool grid to post fits with ! Go here to learn how to do that, don't worry its much easier than it seems Now, it seems that you have re created a stock 4SP build with FF armor / Doubble heat sinks/ and a faster engine with AMS to boot....I a great starting point hmm I wonder if you hehe not a bad thing but its a start. What this will do is give you more longevity if your arms get removed and bosts your fire power to 13.75....also keep in mind that DPS is....well look at your armor values.....if you could focus on your own head for 2 seconds that's 27.5 damage to a spot that only has 18 points of armor . Its a respectable number ! Only thing, with adding the 5th laser this may run hot....SRM6 build heat and so dose every one of your lasers so I would do a weapon grouping something like Group 1 2 med lasers group 2 2 med lasers group 3 1 Med Laser 2 srm6 (A note....the laser in your head should be in group 3 because it dose not move with your arms.) You do it like this because group one would be your main weapon....fire the lasers....if you get the chance hit group 2 on em and then maybe circle around....duck behind some cover and give yourself some time to burn off some heat before running back toward your target and tossing the SRM6 at them. Remember ...you aren't the bringer of death and pain with a constant barrage of pain....you will have to take controlled shots to not overheat with this. Alphastrike is only for people who you think you might be able to take down with one last shot. Should be a last ditch effort because you will either need to let heat run off or the next time you fire you will go into heat shutdown in the middle of the battlefield. Just my thoughts though hehe. Also, I replicated this fit exactly in the mechlab program (yes I have the newest version) and the tonnage seems to be off by 2 tons.....Iv had this before...I think it might be miscalculating engine heatsinks but im not sure. When I upgraded the stock engine it added 2 heatsinks automatically to the "Equipment to be placed" area *shrugs* who knows...Ill look into it some more and see if I can re create the problem then post in the proper thread.
Alright so I built me one of these Hunchies with this design right here and after playing with the other one I think I like this one better because of the SRMS or in my case Streak SRMs. This little guy is fast enough (Made faster if you can afford an XL engine but....that comes later...I dont have those kind of Cbills just yet. It takes a bit of piloting and watching the heat bar but I have sliced arms off awsomes and taken down Yen-Lo-Wangs with this thing....If you are working together with other people this may not do the burst damage of a streak cat (6 streak SRMs) or the shear firepower that an atlas might bring but it will lay down damage continuously on the target. Here is how you do it. Set all of your Lasers on group 1 and hit backspace....little black boxes will start flashing over the numbers and that means that you just set them up for linked fire or chain fire....This will have you firing one laser at a time but you can rapid fire through all of them, but more importantly you can watch your heat and stop when it starts getting to high (50% or more.....let it get up to 75 maybe if you think you can finish the guy off) On group 2 you have streak srm2s .....These are lower damage but also fairly high rate of fire and only 2 of them makes them low heat as well....I tend to fire a couple volleys of these off in between laser bursts just to let some heat boil off. This things role as I play it is to get into a fight...find out what the most people are shooting at and provide steady damage to his torso while the big assaults and heavies spin around to do the burst damage. In many cases this will make you cbills as well because with the lasers firing continuously each laser is a chance to destroy a component or cause ammo explosion. That is if my understanding of the game is correct. Regardless I get component destruction constantly with this thing. A note on Lights.....Use your streaks and only fire lasers when you have a good shot....in most cases they will bug out when they find out you have streaks but dont fallow them...move on to a tougher target and soften that up for your team mates to finish. I plan to post this fit up in the Hunchback section because it is battle tested but I wanted to toss it up here first because its part of this particular discussion . Yea that's a pretty nasty beast hehe I have to say I like this one over the 4P variant just because it has missile racks.....Laserboats are fine but I prefer a verity of weaponry in my mechs...for the most part.
I simulated the Laser based Hunchback, but it doesn't look that promising:

Name: Surgeon

Chassis: HBK-4P

Firepower: 11.95

Heat Efficiency: 35.17

Engine: 210 STD

Jump Jets: N/A

Upgrades: Double Heatsinks Ferro Armor

Weapons:

Right Arm: Left Arm: Right Torso: Left Torso: Head: Medium Pulse Laser Medium Pulse Laser Medium Laser Medium Laser Medium Laser Medium Laser Medium Laser Medium Laser AMS Medium Laser

Heat Sinks: 17

Armor: 338 Maxed on all slots

I'd say the 5 Round Rapid is the best out of these builds? I would make some slight changes (if possible) - Drop an SSRM Ammo (3 tons is a LOT of ammo) - Upgrade to DHS - Add another DHS if possible 2 SSRM is enough to scare away lights cause they know you are gonna hit them constantly! You've also got a lot of firepower in those mediums bu you need to make sure you cool them! Otherwise it's all show and no go.
I built the ML-SRM HB, except the DHS, cost 1.5 million or so, so i gotta grind some. No DHS means no tonnage for AMS too, so it's not complete yet. So far so good though. Heat is a problem, as expected, especially without skills and DHS, but it's not unbearable, especially if you chain your MLs. The SRM6 pack such punch that it's crazy, pieces are flying all over the place after 2 shots. The whole mech feels nice, seems agile and mobile, can tank a lot and deals quite decent, constant damage. I think that with unlocking skills and upgrading to DHS it will really shine. P.S. Stream SRM seems a bit too much of a trade of dps for simply having lock/guidance. Not to mention that lock-on is not always that nice when chasing lights. Leading and shooting SRMs works fine for me so far. Would be even better if they'd finally deploy some EU based servers so i can play with less than 100 ping. *grumble*
I have done roughly 30 or so matches with my HBK-5RR as I call it now Out of those I have not overheated that often at all and most of the time it was on Caustic Vally in the volcano. Its the way I run the lasers....If you chainfire them and toss missiles like a mad man while my heat goes down.... Because of that the heat management is more than adequate and no need for those expensive expensive heatsinks.. As for SRM ammo....I need it....Because I dont have to aim I spam those things like there is no tomarow ! As for the DPS Trade off....its a Rate of Fire vs Burst Damage ....Its roughly 20 less damage but you can put out that damage constantly. This isnt the mech that is going to make Atlas hug their coconut monkeys and cry ....but It will keep it busy and soften its armor up for the rest of the team to move in and take the kill (Though with that many hits per second you will also have a high possibility to get credit for that killing blow. When lights come and try to pick on the poor poor hunchback you really only need to get off a couple shots with the SSRM2s and some laserfire to shoe them away. Keeping your crosshairs over the little buggers is hard but it just takes practice . Just got to work at it.
Well, i am not very experienced yet, but so far there are two things that annoy me with SSRMs, or more like 1 thing with 2 consequences - They are "guided". What this means is that: 1. They tend to miss, and there's nothing really you can do about it. Not that shooting any other weapon means you will never miss, but atleast when you miss you know it's your fault, not "the missiles". Just a personal thing, i guess, but i prefer missing myself rather than missing because the missile doesn't track fast enough. 2. You can't aim them, they seem to be always going for the mid torso as a destination. They do hit other spots, when the target is moving etc. But what that means for me is that i can't use them to target specific slots on a target. What i do now is pick a target, start closing in it while shooting my lasers at a desired arm/spot. When i am close (~200m or less) i have built up some heat by shooting with the 4 MLs, but i am not in proper range for the SRM to not spread too much - aim for the weakened spot, shoot 2xSRM6. If i am lucky i get to blow a limb off with 2 volleys, if i am really lucky even 1. Well that's the perfect case scenario ofc, but still... The SRM6 bursts stuff up real good, and can be aimed if in close range. Then again, to each his own, that's the beauty of the game.
Indeed! I have never had an issue using SSRMs but I do a lot of light hunting and that seems to work best. Still, I'd love to be able to pack on SRM4x2 on my Jenner or even SRM6 but they just don't track the 140+ kph guys as well.
Haha yea streaks always run toward the middle.....Though It dose help when you get up behind someone and alpha their back center torso ! At any rate to each his own is right....I tend to build mechs based on preference first then what is most effective while still keeping within what I like to play .
