In an effort not to derail the online games thread, I am creating a thread for a game I cannot wait to get my hands on. I cannot wait for this game, I have been hoping to play something like this since I played the first Shogun: Total War. I will attempt to keep the OP updated with all the latest informations on this game. Spoiler: Official Blurb Hi all, Total War: WARHAMMER is official! Taking the series to a realm of brutal, high fantasy for the first time in its history, our rules have changed and with change comes war on a scale as yet unimagined. The limitlessly deep and rich universe of Warhammer heralds a new era for Total War. Gigantic monsters, flying creatures, legendary heroes and storms of magical power take their place on the battlefield, alongside thousands of warriors clashing in real-time tactical battles. In the turn-based campaign game, players will find the Old World an unforgiving and treacherous place, filled with endless war and cunning alliances alike. Whichever race you choose to play as and however you seek conquest, you will be faced with a conflict that threatens to tear the very fabric of reality asunder. The first in an epic trilogy of titles, Total War: WARHAMMER will deliver hundreds of hours of absorbing gameplay. It will combine with two further standalone instalments and additional content packs to create the single largest Total War experience ever. “We’ve always loved the Warhammer universe, and couldn’t wait to approach it with the same colossal scale and authenticity that has characterised our titles for the last 15 years,” said Total War: WARHAMMER Project Lead, Ian Roxburgh. “We’re bringing it to life in a way that nobody’s attempted before.” Watch the announcement trailer, voiced by celebrated actor Steven Berkoff. Sega/CA have released some additional info in various places on the interwebs. They are vastly different to the normal types of factions you would see in a normal Total War game. Quality > Quantity. Modding is hardly a suprise. Games Workshop are incredibly anal about what can been seen along side their IP and with the vast amount of factions none playable to start with it would also be a reliable income stream for Sega/CA to introduce races as DLC. Settings wise I would suspect this will take place during the Warhammer End Times story line or at the very least when Archon sallied forth to destroy the known world. With the threat from the north, as Chaos live in the northern wastelands, this would tie in nicely with either. What are your thoughts?
Very excited. Total war has a great reputation and the IP should be in good hands. That being said, you can't base anything on the trailers. Warhammer has a history of amazing trailers and shit games lol.
I will get it, but probably not at launch. Not after Rome 2's miserable launch. That game might be fun now, but launch was a horrific mess...
As much as I hate to say it, I'm also in the 'wait and see' camp. I WANT to be excited about this. But Warhammer (less so 40k, but still 40k as well) just has a...let's say "storied" history of PC game releases, and not the kinds of stories you tell your kids, if you catch my drift? I've had too many underwhelming 'm3h' or outright disappointing experiences with the franchise's digital outings, and that's not even counting the projects we should just call failures like the MMO (which again, I wanted to love with heart and soul, but it was basically on life support from day 1 and stayed there for five years). And like Durandal points out, Total War itself has a great support history, but not the best LAUNCH history. So, why am I still cautiously optimistic and going to keep tabs on this? 1) It looks like this one will have the support it needs from both Games Workshop and the Total War crew: that's good! 2) It also looks like they're being realistic about launch. They understand that trying to release all races/factions at once while still providing differentiated, balanced, and meaningful content is a HUGE undertaking: that's great! These two things alone already address why (in my observations/opinion) some of the more spectacular failures flubbed. If they do this right I want in, but holy crap do they need to get launch right. I'm less excited about the idea of races as paid DLC, but I understand that for something on this scale it probably needs to happen that way. And if they do it well, they should see the money come rolling in. Please, please, please let this one be the awesome it should be.
Great news! But I have to say, not all Warhammer (40k) Games released the last few years were bad. And Dawn of War (not 2) is still one of the best strategy games.
Wow... i love the old warhammer games, shadow or the cursed rat and the second one (forget the name). Playing as the grudgebringers mercenary unit was fun. Agreed, Dawn of War 1 > 2. I never played the single player Space Marine, but it looked like it could be fun.
Space Marine is a BLAST (seriously, go buy it), and when combined with Dawn of War is why I treat 40k's games with better memories than the regular fantasy 'verse. But then DoW2 was a few steps back, but not outright awful. *shrug* It's definitely a mixed bag. I want Total War to blast all those icky memories out. Want to so badly. Then I can go to pretending the bad ones don't exist, the m3h ones are better than they are, and just talk about the good stuff anyway.
Have any of you tried Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon? It was released few months back but if you are into turn gameplay you will have a blast. Getting back to WTW, I'm kinda sad that in order to play other factions you have to wait as they will come in form of additional campaigns. I really do hope they will do one big campaign with all the factions. This year is 15th anniversary of Total War, so maybe they will release it close to x-mas.
@Nakhar, according to CA if you purchase every content pack and the trio of games you will have the entire old world in one large campaign. Probably cost lots of ££/$$ but if they are polished I think it will be well worth it. Any one remember Dark Omen? That game was a blast!
Still have it along shadow of the Horned Rat which i found more demanding, but both have a special place in my heart that will never go away.
Used to love those but lost my copies when moving about 10-15 years ago which is a scary thought in itself.
I think that Shadow of the Hornet Rat is abandonware so you can probably legally download it from internets, not sure about the Dark Omen though.
I'm very skeptical due to SEGA's current ass hatted line on pushing TW games out the door before they are done, braking whats not broken and chopping up the game into 4-5 DLC's just to make a buck.. Also the non nonexistent spine at Creative Assembly really show's non of the original team that created the classics are there to uphold integrity.. This will be a push it out and try to cash in and make each extra race a 10-15$ DLC, So i say FUCKING SAD SHIT!
Armageddon looks meh... There was Warhammer: Battle March, that was ok. Not as good as the Grudgebringers games, but not terrible.
I'm a very hardcore Total War fan. I'm very skeptical of anything Warhammer. Bad combo, in my opinion. I'd stick to M2, Empire, and Shogun 2 if I were yall. The replayability and timesink for those titles is more than enough. Unless you're some sort of Warhammer fan. *cringe* When my premium time runs out in 2 days I am probably beginning a Lets Play for Empire [finally]. Decided to go with that over another campaign in MechCommander Omnitech....
