Hey Folks, So I'm thinking of putting some videos together for MWO. I'd like to ask the folks around if they have any recommendations. Right now I've got suggestions for Fraps and Bandicam. Has anyone got anything else that they use? And how would you rank them for use for newbies?
I personally have a Happague set up, but that's a $100 dollar option. Video's do look good, but I've had driver issues with it before.
I used Fraps once upon a time, it worked, but it will fill up your hard drive very quickly if you're not careful. As of late, I've switched to Open Broadcast Software (OBS) and Shadowplay, which comes free with GeForce Experience if you use Nvidia cards. Shadowplay is nice since it will "shadow" your computer for a set time, which means I can simply hit Alt+F10 after an amazing match/moment and have Shadowplay grab a video for me. Both can also stream to Twitch, though I've only used OBS for that (it has a lot more features for streaming). Shadowplay can have some issues with longer recordings, a lot of my videos have had to have their audio muted since it desynced (more of an Adobe Premiere problem there, Final Cut Pro seems to have fewer issues with the audio), but there's been some video skipping as well that may just be a result of my PC's performance instead of the program. Either way, both work great...I like having Shadowplay regardless since I don't have to have a recording going beforehand, so no missing out on amazing games because I forgot to record Just make sure your recording length is set high enough, 12 minutes is usually good for MWO matches.
FRAPS gives the best recording quality but it is raw data, it doesn't shrink it at all. It can be pretty load intensive on your PC, record to a secondary disk apart from your game disk. That secondary disk better be huge, file size is in the gigabyte. Recommended for a monster PC or if you have a need for super quality films. OBS gives good footage and low overhead but it has algorithms for compressing video so it saves on space at the cost of quality. Highly recommend. Bandicam...not tested but heard good things. There's a cpl of others, can't recall at the moment but will think on it.
I just have shadowplay run constantly. The 15 minutes buffer is perfect for MWO matches. I just hit alt-F10 after a good match. I, however, am looking for a good/cheap/free video editing software.
Rule of thumb, "good" and "cheap/free" are mutually exclusive in the video editing world. The best you're like to find is Movie Maker, and it's not exactly great.
That rule of thumb is quite general Movie maker indeed is a piece of ****. The corel software I got with my laptop not much better. Let me rephrase my question with: "affordable"
Like PyckenZot I have ShadowPlay working in background all the time. The quality is fine, at least for my requirements, and what absolutely amazing with it you decide to save the video only afterward. No more "oh no this game was awesome but I didn't recorded". The problem is it only comes with NVidia card.
When im recording im using Shadowplay with 60fps, 50Mbit rate giving about 20 minutes for 6gb. Im not really editing my files Avidemux that lets me cut and merge videos without recoding the video so no quality is lost (and its fast)
I used Sony Movie Maker Platinum for my last couple projects, including UrbieQuest. That's $55 tops on Amazon. Don't get the cheapest version, cuz it's already the ghetto version of Vegas... For recording I use Afterburner, an old version. It's free. It's great, lot of options for recording. The catch? You gotta run game in 32bit. :x
I'll echo what others have said about ShadowPlay. I generally keep it running all the time when I'm gaming: 60 FPS, 50 MB, and I have the time-limit set to 13 minutes, as that is the max size I found that won't cut the file in half all the time. The quality with ShadowPlay is great, and it is SOOO easy to use, since you don't have to start or stop like other programs (though that option is still there if you want it); instead, you simply have it running in the background, play your game, and when you're sitting at the end of an awesome match that you'd like to keep a recording of, you simply hit the button to save it (F8 for me). So easy, so nice. That said, yes, it requires that you have an NVidia card (though who doesn't, sheesh?! ). And yes, some people have problems with audio-desync . . . I did in the past myself, but after a driver update, I haven't had that problem since. I definitely recommend it, primarily because of how easy it is to use. Otherwise, I've heard alot of good things about OBS.
I've actually learned that most (all?) of my audio sync issues with Shadowplay are actually problems in Adobe Premiere, since it expects a constant framerate, not a fluctuating one like you get with games...since it's intended more for film editing, it doesn't do as well with video game content. If you want the absolute best in terms of video editing, I'd say Final Cut Pro is one of the top options...but the newest versions are Mac only (there's a reason why any professional video editing for movies/animation studios/etc is done on Macs ). It also costs $300, so...
