Low Video Quality with Vsync on Very High Quality with Vsync on. As you can see, playing on Low gives you a obvious edge when fighting. You can see for sure what textures are solid, and can't be moved thru, and where the target is, as it stands out against the background. What are your thoughts on this?
Hum... not really, sorry. The only significant difference I see are the shadows. I'd be interested by a shadow/no shadow comparison.
In the first screenshot, the Atlas is literally popping out of the background, making him a focus. Mostly due to the textures being so poor, but the contrast of the higher textures behind it and the lack of shadows. In the second screenshot, there are shadows, lighting, and the Atlas and the surrounding textures being of similar quality, and this makes the Atlas not pop out of the screen.
It's poping mostly because of the absence of shadows, and I'm not even sure it pops more than on others maps. Generally speaking I find we don't see shit on most maps (exceptions being Caustic Valley, Alpine Peaks and maybe Crimson Straits) and I play on thermal vision half of the time for this reason.
I think lack of fog is a bigger deal than shadows. While not horrible from 50m away in those screenshots, try shooting someone towards the wall, especially in ecm coverage so you don't get the pretty red box to shoot the middle of. As epikt said, this forces us to play in black and white most maps which is just dumb.
Obviously using Swamp/Jungle Camouflage Skins makes perfect sense on this map. ECM Lights with such are very hard to identify if they hide behind roots and leafs.
This is me as well. I hit Thermal Vision in close brawls on most maps, as it's much easier to see targets, as well as to focus a specific component. That being said, I would NEVER lower Graphic Settings just so I don't have to see unnecessary map-content . . . especially on Veridian Bog . . . it's just too beautiful.
..... does thermal make that much difference on that map as I've been trying to learn it running around at 170 so been in normal.
It mainly helps see the enemies . . . they show up in bright white against the dark grey background . . . helps alot on most maps.
Well yeah but I only ever use it once I know a map well or actually always on the winter map as otherwise with maxed settings its just a blizzard....
I always thought Frozen City was the poster child for visibility issues. During the day it's one of my least favorite maps due to the shit visibility, but I absolutely love that map at night. It's one of the reasons I like dropping on Frozen City Night and HPG Manifold - beautiful, haze free meching in which I can enjoy the look of the terrain without having to have thermal vision on all the time. I wish I didn't have to have thermals on for so many maps as I'd really like to revel in the prettiness of the maps more.
i hate to use Thermal as well. The old one version with colors was cool, but now its ugly and sometimes dragging my framerate down to hell. No idea why.
As with many other games, turning visual settings down can reduce clutter and provide a competitive advantage. I can run this game at max settings with > 100 FPS, but I turn the quality down to remove fog and shadows that get in the way of seeing important things. Immersion is secondary to winning.
The map looks fine visually. I keep expecting a kid riding a dinosaur that says T_Rex 3044 to go running by but other than that it is visually no better or worse than the others. What I do have an issue with is the sheer amount of foliage and how it blocks my AC20 rounds LOL I've only had the map once but that one time had my gnashing my teeth.
The new map is simply amazing and a JJ capable ECM mechs wet dream! The lack of fog in the lower spec picture will be a clear advantage, but I'm keeping it high. I didn't spend the time configuring my system to not use its capabilities,...
In regard to Vergere's OP, Shadows are the biggest difference for me. I've been switching between Thermal and Standard pretty frequently, probably using both 50/50. Even though I don't prefer to use thermal, but I appreciate that maps put you in a situation where you should use other vision options. It really puts you into the environment. If you were really fighting in a dense jungle, and visibility was low, you would use Thermal vision all-day every-day if that technology was available to you. So I don't have a problem with that part. Low quality settings will always have a slight edge over higher quality, it is minimal and not game-changing in most circumstance. This is also the case in Battlefield as an example. All the competitive players I played with in BF3 turned everything on Low that didn't effect draw distance. (lol, there is no competitive BF3 ) Uploaded to Reddit last night, figured might as well share with you guys too
