I've always enjoyed my Ilya and have put together a sizable collection of mechs based upon its hard work generating bonus c-bills for me. The low-slung hardpoints on the arms have always given me fits, however, and having to expose most of my mech to bring my firepower to bear has caused me to die a little bit too frequently (as I'm sure you've noticed that cataphracts are hard mechs to miss!). Having recently picked up Jagermechs, I'm starting to view that chassis as the superior ballistic support mech as the guns are so high slung you can protect most of your mech while still tearing apart the enemies. That leaves me with a question as to what to do with the Ilya since its role is replaced by the Jagermechs and it can't be a true meta mech since it lacks the jump jets. So... I'm going to try this build as a mobile supporter. The main benefit of this mech is that it can provide really good mobile DPS and long range firepower from its high-mounted torso weapons. This allows it to either hill hump, or to just show its right shoulder and cause some pain. The machine guns and arm mounted medium laser are essentially there for finishing off mechs near the end of the match as I don't suggest charging in just to make use of them as it doesn't really improve your firepower appreciably. My current build (1x PPC, 1x LLAs, 2xUAC5s - with a much slower engine) actually works extremely well, so I'm hoping that this mech will also perform beautifully with its additional speed and increased torso twisting rate. You can also strip off AMS or some armor and push the engine up all the way to XL340 if you want, but I *love* having the big shield arms on this (which are, honestly, completely disposable on this mech) and having AMS with the missile buffs just seems prudent. Plus, I find immense satisfaction in a mech that uses every critical slot with most of its armor intact. Min-max for the win!
You should call this the pocketknife, "A weapon for every range!". How are your weapons grouped? Do you have five different buttons? Cause you have five different ranges and nearly as many different bullet speed? Each to his own, I'm sure it performed for you but for me this is a no with that many different weapons.
It may seem like a lot of weapon types, but really it's not that bad. Here's how I have them linked: 1) PPC + UAC5 (The whole reason why it's an AC5 is that it can sync with the PPC) 2) ER Large Laser 3) Medium Laser + Machine Guns + UAC5 Granted, sometimes some machine gun ammo gets wasted because of range issues but that really doesn't matter too much. The alternative is to map my 4th button to toggle on continuous fire for the machine guns which is also quite effective. If such things are really to tough to handle, just drop the medium laser and slap in another tone of UAC5 ammo and (probably) upgrade the PPC to an ERPPC.
Tough to handle? I use more weapongroups then that on some mechs, it isn't impossible to handle up to five. But your weapons have speeds of: Instant (laser) 2000 (MG) 1500 (PPC) 1300 (UAC) And you have range effectiveness: 600-1800 (UAC) 675-1350 (ERLLAS) 540-1080 (PPC w min 90) 270-540 (MLAS) 120-240 (MG) All of that means when you group it on three triggers and use them together, you will probably miss/waste ammo/waste heat on a few shots. It's your build, if you do great in it, excellent for you. I'm just giving feedback.
I grew up hunting birds with my fathers single trigger 2x barrel and you always fire the second shot slightly behind the first. Talk about the pre-internet heated discussions on staggered shots. I know that at long and real close ranges with birds and bots, the wasted ammo on the single hits is made up for with the slightly delayed next shot. I love seeing lights trying to out run my stagger shots with mixed guns and PPCs. If I could ever get my dad to learn how to up screen shots in his email, I wonder if he would appreciate the "good shooting" or "how did you learn to hit those" comments I have gotten (probably omit the "noob" and "L2P a**h**e" though).
