I was in a match last night. Total time was 4:38. A guy on our team had 985 dmg, 5 kills, 6 assists. In a Stormcrow. I've done those damage numbers, but I doubt I've ever come close to that under five minutes.

I pm'ed the guy afterward, he didn't find it very impressive. Is he crazy? Or am I just easily impressed?

Actually you can look at this one of two ways... Artillery was mega effective that round OR he is a terribad shot... If he had that many kills with 200 points of damage? I would quake in fear cause that mofo would know how to shoot to kill but spraying all over the place?

Agree. Good players are minimalist. They deal the less dmg possible to destroy the most possible enemies

I have to say, I personally don't find those numbers all that impossible . . . though it could depend on the map and what build he was running. If I were to guess right now, I would say he was probably running an ERLL+ERML boat, and that the map was FrozenCity, ForestColonySnow, or Alpine (cold maps). With the ~106 kph of the Stormcrow, he'd be able to get to a good sniping position fairly quickly, and with such a build, on a cold map he can keep the damage going for a good while. And 5 minutes . . . I would say most matches average between 4 and 7 minutes now (at least in my experience) so yeah, I wouldn't say it's impossible; it's definitely impressive, as ~1000 damage is always impressive. But as Michael said, he might have used an Artillery strike to boost that damage (saw one do a confirmed 200+ damage the other day, so they can definitely do some damage). And the kills . . . well when you do that much damage, a few kills should be expected.

Anyway, I don't know what build or what map it was, but in any case, it's definitely quite possible under ideal circumstances.

Let's look at a couple builds shall we?

This one can do 936 damage in about 2 minutes

Constant firing, this one can put out 1170 damage in 4 minutes 38 seconds

The rest of the most popular, high rated builds are more or less the same @ about 5 DPS

Depending on the mech and situation, damage can rise pretty fast.
Not in a Stormcrow, but here's the last game I played tonight:

(Jagermech, 2 gauss, 4 MLas, the very same mech I recommend on this thread)

On this game there was no preliminary skirmishes, instant brawl. I fired my first shot at the first minute mark, the fight was between buildings but I still had a decent rate of fire and only missed one shot (aiming at a spider, how silly of me). If our team hadn't been obliterated in the meantime 1000dmg in 4m30s minutes would have been piece of cake.

Lets also not forget ammo explosions which can send your damage total rocketing. :D

For that matter, knock out a side torso and you get credit for the arm and all equipment in it as well

I don't agree with some of this for a number of reasons. If he had 5 kills and did 200 damage, he might have been just getting the last shot on several mechs just as easy as being a crack shot. Also it really depends on the weapon system, if he is using LRM's or SRM's he isn't going to be doing pinpoint damage and will be spreading it out more than using ERLL's. Besides there are plenty of situations where you are shooting arms or side torso's first just because your not in a position to take a shot at the center.

As far as the "spray and pray", high damage might also mean a lot of "shot of opportunity" moments. Hell, the highest damage I ever got in a Raven was in sniper mode, just popping in and out of cover and peppering the nearest mech with some fire. Took me a while to get some kills in, but it wasn't exactly amenable to pinpoint accuracy ;) One does ones best, at times.

You are entitled to your own thoughts of course but I've had games where I've killed 4-5 mechs and score 500 damane or less. I've also had games where I have purposefully stripped mechs to up my damage for a contest or just bragging rights.

Killers get it done. Showboats crank up the damage levels. ;)

Killers shouldn't need to break 1000 remember. :p

Oh, I have no issues killing mechs. I was just trying to see if I still had what it took to break 1200 in a Raven. Among the UMAD guys its considered a badge of honor to take out a Super Chicken and pull some decent numbers with it. Any one of those guys can easily kill 5-8 mechs in a round but ripping them apart (showboating) is what I seem to have lost the ability to do.

Doing lots of damage means you either got lucky with ammo/internal explosions... suck ass at hitting specific places and thus spread too much... or, if you're really good, it's for showboating when you dissect a squad of turds like a cat w/ a mouse.

But you should be doing lots of damage. Otherwise you're being inefficient. Risk it to be efficient, that's how you should approach the game, too much timidity in the game from most. Not saying derp forward full tilt, but if aren't pumping out lots of damage then what the fuck are you doing.

On the topic of damage vs kills, I have to add that, which of these one chooses to go for should always depend on the particular situation of your team within the match. I cannot approve of any player on my team racking up extra damage in a losing match, when taking a few quick-and-precise kills might turn the tide and win it for us. It's different if we're rolling the enemy team going for an easy 12-0 score (which happens semi-regularly in UMAD, though not all that often); but in most matches, where taking that Direwolf down as soon as possible could split the difference between victory and defeat, I expect my team-members to focus on the kill at all times.

For myself at least, I always aim to kill (or at least to neuter/disable) the enemy. Damage matters less than the victory in my book. But at the same time, I don't generally have a problem getting damage, I think primarily for the reasons Remarius and Deckard Caine already mentioned: knocking off components and getting kills can boost one's damage quite nicely. Take a look at the second score-screen for any 1000+ match: chances are, that person got several component-destructions, and most likely a few kills as well. ;)

Here's a nice example from a match I had the other night.

    15 component destructions . . . 5 kills . . . was a good match.

Here's a video of the match, just so you can see how I go for the kill. (Looking at you, Soy.) :p

Ok, here's a challenge for those who don't think this is very hard. Post a screenshot of 900+ damage in a game that was under 5 minutes long...By a medium mech. I've only got screenshots for the last couple months, and only have one game at 5:02 where I have around 900 dmg...In a TBR. In the example above, the BNC has great damage, but still less DPM. (995/4.63minutes=213 dpm for the SCR I reference in the OP)

Now, I don't doubt that some of you have these types of games under your belt. Are they common? I really don't think so. And for people downplaying the damage/kill ratio...it's still 5 kills in under 5 minutes. Keep your shorts on.
