Immersion can work like that. It just depends on the type of film. 2001 uses sound in space properly, when Dave is entering the airlock there is no sound, and sound volume gradually rises as the air density increases. The muffled sounds are OK, but some more sound should be conducted through the mech when it gets hit.
Getting hit should still sound loud as hell. Sound travels fine through solid. And I assume theres air in the mech and that the pilot ain't wearing an EVA suit.
Getting hit should cause sound, but the amount would vary depending on the weapon. Lasers don't make noise, though vibrations caused by capacitor discharges when firing them can cause some sound. The beam can ionize the air it passes through, creating sound (just as happens with thunder.) Getting hit by a laser would cause sound primarily due to the expanding cloud of vapor from the region it hits. That would largely be due to the interaction with the outside atmosphere. ACs would be largely the opposite, most of the sound is from the propellant gasses exiting the barrel, which would be greatly muted without atmosphere. The impact is pretty much entirely the solid projectile hitting the mech, and wouldn't be greatly muted without an atmosphere. Missiles should have muted sounds for both launch and impact, though less so for impact. Instead, they muted all the sounds effectively equally. While some muting helps immersion, doing it wrong messes with the heads of anyone who understands acoustics.
I did have a really great Assault game on there the other night, my group lance forced a push to the enemy base which forced the fight outside of "thunderdome" it was amazing and we cleaned their clocks... but you can have very interesting battles on this map if you get pugs who are willing to do something other then "march to middle of map and kill stuff till its dead"
I don't quite know why they are still doing random map selection the way they are. You should at least be given the option to select a mech to drop in once the conditions of the drop are known. A selection of 4 mechs to choose from before you select mission type would be a good way to go with it. One for hot one for cold one customized for urban one for wide open spaces.... Once you know what map you are dropping in you select your mech, hit ready and drop. It would give reason to the ready button other than sitting there waiting for tards to hit it.... sorry about the tard thing.
The map itself is nice, but I agree with the lack of sound ruining it slightly, I love the sound of my Autocannons.
