Hiding as the last mech in skirmish...

Thread in 'MechWarrior Online' started by e92, Dec 19, 2013.

Should not trying to win, but to just 'staying alive' be a part of the game?

  1. Hiding is wrong, you should always be trying to win.

Okay, well I've now been in two 15 minute skirmishes where there was absolutely no fighting in the last 8 minutes of either match.

The first it was a raven that shutdown face-planted into the side of some mountain. No one could see where he was and it ended up being 23 people yelling at him to stop being childish, proposing arguments of what the point of the game is, and such like that.

The second it was a spider that ran off and sat on a mountain powered up for about 2 minutes. I took the opportunity to call out his position since he made it clear he had zero intentions of engaging. More than half of my own team called me out. I said I would stop if 3 people told me to stop. They did, I stopped. The spider proceeded to run around the edge of the map for the next 6 minutes.

    I don't understand.

The point of the game, as I understood it was to win. You don't get a tie for being in a 15 minute skirmish. You lose if you have less mechs. Why would anyone condone a light that is doing absolutely nothing to try to win the game and instead lash out at me for trying to get him to stop wasting 23 other peoples time?

The first match ended up in multiple people saying they would report the raven.
The second ended up in at least one person saying they would report me.

    Who's right?

Some people view their KDR with more importance. When I solo drop and my team sucks...I will hide. Play like idiots, watch like idiots.

As for your question, you are wrong. Just because you don't like that he ran, is no reason to give his position away, and if reported enough is a banable offence.

Here is my take on this...

First, your poll comes across as skewed and a little ambiguous. Almost as if you are giving people the option to select your opinion over alternatives.

Next, why should I surrender and go and get myself killed just because I am the last person alive?

There have been many matches where I have defeated an opponent or two in order to win the game when I was the last person left alive. I can recall one against a Misery in which I was in a Highlander and was stripped down to a single gauss rifle (with 3-4 rounds left) and I was legged. I still managed to close on him and get off a lucky shot to win the match.

Whether I am in a Spider with ECM and a single ERLLas or a Highlander with a single Gauss rifle left I will never stop fighting but I will be smart about it; I will use cover, I will use ECM, I will use tactical movement. If that means hiding in my mech until the enemy splits up so I can take them one by one then so be it. Harassing me just because everyone else is dead will result in a report. Calling out my location in an attempt to get me killed by the OpFor will also result in a report.

I couldn't care less if my staying alive prevents you from immediately finding another match with that particular mech. It is what it is and my enjoyment is just as important to me as yours is to you except that *I* am the MF'r still alive and moving and you are not; luck of the draw, suck it up.

And that is all there is to it.

So let them (shrugs). You takes your chances every time you drop into a Skirmish Mode match. If you can't handle the match parameters then don't drop in that play style.

But are you actively alive and trying to fight? Or are you shut-down and hiding somewhere obviously as far away from the beaten path as possible? I don't care if the last guy is still active and trying to pad his kills or hell, even win. But if he's shut down and hoping that for the next five minutes or so no one notices him then it's not just *my* time he's wasting. He's wasting the time of upwards of 12 other people that can't just call it a GG and disconnect. For what? To keep his e-peen just a little bit longer.

Well, when PGI lets me exclude modes rather than select one specific mode, Skirmish is out. I'd rather lose a 2 minute Capwarrior game, than win a fifteen minute game that ends in ten minutes of hide-and-go-seek while the other team's last remaining mech runs and/or hides with no intentions of even *considering* fighting.

As a note, I didn't vote for either option. Hiding is fine, refusing to fight is not.

Hiding is fine in some situations:
    - when your team still fights (you're hiding so you don't give the enemy a free point)
    - when you're doing so in order to ambush
    - when you can win on cap

But when it's only to protect your so important K/D ratio, you only deserve to be given by your teammates.
A reputation system and the possibility to vote-kick a teammate might also come handy.

I tried to be fair for the options, but I was still frustrated and obviously I do feel strongly one-sided about it. If you can help me change it, I'm more than happy to.

I don't want people to surrender or give up. I just want the fight to go on. In both cases above, not one single shot was fired by the last remaining mech in the last 8 minutes of play. That is my issue with it. They were no longer fighting or trying to win the game in any way shape or form. They were simply delaying the game to the 15 minute mark.

A game or two prior to that match I was in a tourmaline match where the last remaining mech on my team was a jager with a lot of ammo left. He advantageously left the main fight early and got to a good shooting position with a choke point. He killed 3 more mechs before he was overwhelmed. I commended him on the game. It was smart play and good piloting.

Thats a perfectly fine standpoint. I play skirmish because all I am looking to do in this game is fight. I believe that was what the game mode was designed for. I always played conquest prior to the release of this mode because it always guaranteed a fight of some kind. Assault didn't and honestly at least 20% of my matches in assault ended in a cap war.

My standpoint boils down to what a lot of other games define as "grieving". Are the actions of a particular player outside of what was designed for the game and preventing other people from playing the game.

    the options should be:

    1. I am a Chicken, so i hide in a place and maybe even shutdown
    2. I want to take as many of them to hell, but use hiding tactically for surprise attacks
    3. I don't care fear about dying, so let's play Rambo!
    4. I don't have a chance, so they can Gangbang-Massacre me, no problem

Powering down to let a group.of hunters bypass you? OK

Powering down to preserve your kdr? Not okay

The problem stems from the fact that people can't always tell which one you are doing. I usually give it a 10 count when powered down to allow enemy to bypass my location then I kick the pig and go and engage.

Also for those reading who DO want to preserve their kdr? Its going to be reset when acheivments come out. Have a nice day!!!
