All-rounder Cataphract. My first build of any mech in MW:O, so let me know what you think!

STD300 can be swapped for a couple of extra DHS and a STD280, I'm still ~500,000 cbills short of being able to test that out though.

I also originally dropped two DHS for an AMS, but it didn't seem to be worth it against the LRMboats I end up against.

Edit: switched to Ferro for some extra armouring.

You'd probably be better off trading the right arm's LLas for two MPLas. With the ton you got back, you could add CASE and some armor. Since you'd have a good swatter weapon, you might be able to get away with moving the remaining arm LLas to the torso (shield arms are very useful).

I also feel like there isn't enough ammo. 60 rounds of AC/5 goes pretty quickly.

Thanks for your suggestions Archwright. I had a bit of a play with it, swapping the right arm LLas for those two MPLas. I also relocated the UAC/5 ammo to the head, the left leg, and instead of CASE added an extra ton of ammo to the right leg.

Looking at the stats though, I end up losing a lot of cooling efficiency (down to 37% from 44%) and max sustained DPS takes a pretty big hit too (~5%) if I do that. Alpha goes from 32 points to 35 points though. The biggest reason why I'd be keen to stick with 3xLLas instead of adding those MPlas is because I'm still starting off with MWO and would rather manage two weapon groups with two optimum ranges than three weapon groups with three different optimum ranges...

It would be good practice for when I upgrade to an Assault though.

I generally configure my weapon groups this way:

Group 1 (Right Mouse): Main gun(s)
Group 2 (Left Mouse): Quick-fire, arm mounted weapon
Group 3 (Middle Mouse or Left Shift): The big guns
Group 4 (Left Shift or 'G'): Face melt.

If you have 4 mouse-buttons it's easier, that's for sure. However, even with my dorky 2-button trackball I can wreck faces with the right weapon config.

Assaults are, at best, a horizontal upgrade to heavies. That extra tonnage packs an awful lot of responsibility.

Hey Archwright, had a couple of good games with you tonight, cheers :) (P.S. http://battletechfanon.wikia.com/wiki/Bushmaster ;))

I gave multiple weapon groups a go, turns out it's not as hard as I thought it would be. I also tried out the MPlas, but it just didn't work out - too hot, too short ranged for me. I ended up doing a complete 180 on my build though, and came up with this:

Way more effective than my initial 3xLLas and UAC5. The AC/20 really dishes out the damage, and the ERLLas is much, much better for maps like Alpine. I recommend it!

This is how I'd change the original build post:

change to regular med lasers because MPLS is indeed too short range
high energy points with ERLL for the sniping
remove FF to fit more heatsinks (better sustained DPS than adding another ML)

the second build is fun too I suppose but if I'm mounting an AC20 I'm gonna be brawling, not sniping at range with ERLL. In my opinion suiting both ranges sub-optimally doesn't give your mech a real 'comfort zone' and I'd much rather run the standard 1xAC20+5xML. If you're gonna be at range, get a Gauss (and probably get rid of a DHS for more ammo)
