I've been wanting to play a medium for some time now, and I kinda need to find a good starting medium. I really like light mechs and assualts, and from what I've heard mediums are a mix of the two with light being more prominent? anyways, need some ideas for good medium mechs to buy

Mediums are the BEST. My favorite mech for learning but also probably just the most fun weight because you can be a little risky without getting taken out in one shot. Cicadas are a blast if you like a fast evasive laser boat. Shadowhawk is a great all around mech. Good for fire support or even brawling. Bushwacker is a really nasty fire support that you can put a couple RACs on to ruin someone's day. If you want some good clan mediums you can do a good laser boat with the Nova or do some poptarting with a couple PPCs with the Vapor Eagle.

There's the classic hunchback and its variants, but my personal favorite is the Phoenix Hawk 1K. You can put 8 medium pulse lasers on it. It's a lighter, slimmer discoback, with enough speed to run the hell away.

  5. If you are looking for a ranged medium, a lot of people have good luck with Shadow Cat.
ECM, jump jets, and MASC. Very annoying to play against as a slow assault.

^ Shadowcat definitely sounds like a good one to learn with. Very maneuverable with optional ECM makes it pretty good at avoiding/escaping bad situations.

I personally really enjoy the Vapor Eagles (VGL-1 with 3xPPC is a fantastic 'mech), Phoenix Hawks and the Huntsman.

Huntsman is a really versatile omni, there's tons of different ways you can build it which would let you experiment with several playstyles on just the single medium 'mech so I'd probably recommend that or the shadowcat to start with if money is tight.
