Thing is, as an uber LRM boat your big and slow is less of a problem, as long as you know to be constantly moving into a safe second line position and avoiding direct LOS with big enemy guns. The fast lights should be dealt with by your careful positioning and your team's light hunters. But running a PPC boat means you will have to trade punches at some point, and awesome is crunchy to say the least.
I don't even have backup weapons on my AWS-8R. 2 MLas or nothing, it does not make any difference if my lousy positioning allows an Oxide to get close.
How much can I disagree?! Trenchbucket? The 7M may be the only truly viable variant, but it's a SOLID! With 3x SRM+A, 3x MLas, 2x JJ, XL300, and 13 DHS... This thing remains in my Garage. Not a bad mech by any means. It's a SHD-2K with a few weapons on articulated arms. WIN. The Orion... COM'N, V! It's a mini-Atlas! AC/20 and lasers, 4x SRM6+A and lasers, 4x LPLs w/ XL360, LRM potential (though I hate LRMs) It's solid... Awesome and Garglewash... yeah... they suck... Personally, I'd rank like this... Lights: IS: COM - CLAN: MLX - Pure Terribad. No questions! Mids: IS: CRBs (Only Energy - no other option? No.) - CLAN: IFR. No explanation needed. Heavy: IS: QKD (All but Hero is Energy/Missile, not enough structure) CLAN: Summoner - I love the Streak/SRM boats, but they have little room for equipment. Assault: IS: AWS - No question. No doubt. Terribad hitboxes and quirks. CLAN: GARGLEWASH. Ankle hitting hardpoints and too few to be productive. Meh. All around, IS has better potential, but Clans can put out more DPS face to face (as usual)
Crabs are really hard to kill and they are a great laser vomit chassis. I can understand why people might not LIKE the crab but they are a good mech. I think they might be the next mech I buy.
... Okay... Point taken... I'd still say they aren't the worst simply because of their versatility against other chassis, but you make a good point.
Commandos seem to be a bit thougher these days with the structure boost, and at least there is ECM and TDK. Crabs are tough to kill... they are like laser-roach. Sure there is little difference between them, but as a function they are fine. Quickdraw... now that is a sad mech. IFR type of sad. Not MLX sad yet, but MLX can be saved if they allow for removal of that cAP, and pump out a variant with Config G (8x MG! + 4x Energy) and/or some torso laser. Gargoyle suffers from the "hands only" Syndrome. They really need to make a few torso weapon hardpoints for a few of those mechs.
I think a honourable mention should go to all the Clan mechs that have Ferro-Fibrous, but not Endo-Steel (MDD, SMN, GAR, WHK, EXE ) or even none of them. (NVA, HBR)
Poor Summoners. I WANT to like them, but the weight is just not available for any great builds besides missiles... Le sigh.
