Nice to get some more cbills out of hero variants...I may bring out my X5 just to see what I can do on the leaderboard (and it's a prime candidate for survivor thanks to the build I like running on it ). Russ said that there will likely be multiple events like this, hence why not every hero was included. The negative? ZERO rewards for people without hero mechs this time
Honestly...the 3M has always been the best choice thanks to ECM. The quirks are alright on the X5, but I tend to run it in a way that has nothing to do with the quirks (2 PPCs) so I'm a bit of an outlier
I'm looking at TDK honestly, might be fun to zip around at 171 kph with BAP, 4xMLAS at 45% (or there about) cooling eff. Oxide could be fun but I have the Hugin already so it feels a bit like I got this role covered, even though one is DPS and the other Alpha damage style. As for the rest of the heroes...not sure. I have the Ilya but the others are a bit meh?
@WhoopieMonster : I was in the same boat for some seconds, but sadly (1) the Awesomes aren't that awsome, (2) Pretty Baby got sweet quirks but using all the hardpoints requires some kind of artistic skills for all the different weapon groups and (3) the best part of it remains to be it's camo. @Lan : TDK is a fun little mech, but a LCT-1E probably does the same job better. Huginn & Oxide: other way around here. Own them both but Huginn fits my style of playing light mechs better. Oxide at 50% is still a bargain, so I'd still recommwnd getting it at that discount if you like light mechs. It's a pretty unique little monster. I'd say Fang and Flame are for Dragon fans only because of the known weaknesses of that chassis, but still can do some nice tricks. Ilya isn't the monster it used to be, but I still can pull some very nice rounds with it (3x UACs, 3x MLas). YLW finally is one of the mechs I'd consider a must-have for all old school BT fans like me.
@Aylek, any experiance with the Heavy Metal? I have no experiance of the standard varients for any of the Hero mechs on sale.
@Aylek - Worth thinking about, thx. The YLW though...never liked mechs that put it all in one arm. It feels like everyone in my ELO range knows all too well how mechs are configured.
Ah, ok, if the question is which ones of this bunch one really NEEDS to have, I can be short: JR7-0 and CN9-YLW There are some other good ones in the list but imho those 2 should be in every garage. I cannot describe the joy of driving the Oxide, just get it and experience it! It was a monster with 4 streaks but it became a true little hulk with the SRM4 quirks. (note to self,... green paint) Just watch your ammo consumption!
The problem with X5 is that you cannot have SRM4 nicely due to tube size restriction. Increase the tubes to M(6) and all is good. I mean a 2xSRM4+4xSPL would be spiffy.
HM was my second hero mech after the Flame and this means I got it for more than 2 years now. It was my favorite mech by a huge margin for quite some time and it's a nice variant among the Highlanders while suffering from the same problems as the chassis in general - big & slow target, 2t JJs, relatively small weapon quirks and so on. I never tried any HGN with more than 2 JJs since the change to assault mechs' JJs because of the weight consumption, so I can't comment on the viability of the jump capability there. Heavy Metal got some monstrous armor quirks to the arms, so if you like the play style of a twisting & tanking assault AND got a soft spot for HGNs AND want the 30% CBill boost, then go for it. JJs (1 or 2) are only there for small terrain obstacles and added agility. Other than that, HM plays for me like a Banshee but with added usability of the weapons because of the fully articulated arms carrying the main weapons. If you're not particularly after the CBill bonus (and THE original war horn!), you might want to wait for the CBill release of the 732b, as that one seems to be even tankier than HM.
Same for me, but this becomes a lot less problematic as soon as you play this as a kind of a fast assassin / harasser and for finishing mechs already involved in battle. This thing works for me as hell since I am using it this way - somehow as a kind of a very heavy light mech. Speaking of lights, it also makes for an eycellent light hunter if you are used to it's quirked AC20. I am using an XL280, 2 MLas , BAP and 5.5 tons of ammo for the 20, and a 100 kph ECM countering BFG is nothing to be sneezed at. @enileph : X5 only got 2-sized tubes, yes, but shoudn't the duration of a SRM4 fired from them be pretty similar to the duration of a MLas so that you have to face the target for that amount of time anyway?
You CAN actually run it like that, and just treat it like you're running quad SRM2's (which, thanks to the tube size, you pretty much ARE): It can actually work, you just have to be very careful about choosing your moment of engagement. Of course, you can just change them to 2's, and run more DHS and it would be very efficient:
Not sure if it's worth too much tho, considering the amazing ML quirks : Medium Laser Heat Generation -20% Medium Laser Range 40% Medium Laser Duration -20% The 40% range is hard to skip, paired with the duration and heat gen. Now if only it could use SRM4s properly, it would be a really nice mech : 2 and 3 tons of ammo considering the 25% cooldown missile quirk.
I'd be very in favor of locking all hero mech's ELO at a set point for a fair playing field. "Let's see who can carry the hardest with a Hero mech quirked to be pigeonholed into one build." *Ties some people's hands behind their backs*
It's the eternal choice of MLas vs SPL: range and higher alpha vs better heat and DPS. SPL can fire more often, and can tear through someone quickly. That said, either can work, it's just a matter of playstyle...though SPL IS riskier on the massive medium mech compared to, say, a Locust
