Ok so with Pot of Gold coming up I'm weighing up which Champion mech to buy so i can Master a 50 ton mech, so its either Yen Lo Wang or Grid Iron. What are the pros and cons of each chassis? On paper we have: Centurion: Turn Rate Quirks AC/20 arm mounted gives more flexibility when aiming Faster Torso Twist 56.3% vs 37.5% Armoured Shield arm 30% C-Bill Bonus on an AC-20 build Cons AC-20 is low mounted Hunchback Pros High Mounted Hunch for hill peeps Armour and structure on hunch More variety of builds to try Gauss, AC-20, AC-10 4G AC-20 quirks are 5% better than Yen Lo Wang Cons: I dont really like Gauss Rifles on Grid Iron, the warm up is a pain. Can anyone that owns or has mastered both chassis give some real world advice on this?
Mastered them both, but prefer the YLW for a much more agile play style. I am using the GI as a mobile Gauss turret, though.... but that's what the mech tells me to do.
I didn't understand if you ask about the hero mechs only, or all variants. Hunchies have at least three very strong variants of different styles: 4G for AC/20, 4J for lurms and 4P for lasers. But Centurions also offer a wild range of gamestyles, and can deal their share of damage: AH is a brawling beast (but fragile), A is a brawling beast (and can take a serious beating), AL makes a pretty good mid range support, D has an hilarious quirked shotgun, etc. I've mastered Centurions and Hunchbacks (but I don't have the Grid Iron) and like both. To be honest, I'd have a hard time deciding which one I prefer (Centurion probably, because like Aylek said their piloting is more agile).
As the other two have said do I won't repeat. If you're just after a hero mech go for the YLW as its a very solid and deadly mech. The Grid Iron is far weaker IMO due to the quirks. Edit: That's from personal experience.
If you have neither and only cash for 1, go YLW. You will love and cherish that monster of a mech. I personally will be getting the GI this weekend just because I have seen a corp-mate wreak utter havoc in it and I now see a cheap opportunity to do the same.
I've only started playing hunchies lately, but I'd say go with the Centurian. If for no other reason than all the entertaining dick jokes.
Not to hijack the thread, but is the YLW still worth it if you already have the CN9-AH(L)? I'm also torn between the YLW or Grid Iron.
They play very differently from each other. You need to put a smaller engine in the AH because of how much more weight investment the SRM4's and ammo take.
Not only a smaller engine, but also an XL, which makes the AH pretty fragile, especially for a close range mech. What is great about the Yen Lo Wang is you'll most likely use a standard engine and have your complete left side to use as a shield. But it's your call if you think it worth it or not. Basically: do you need another AC/20 medium? I personally love AC/20 mediums so I can never have enough, but I understand people contenting themselves the CN9-AH and the HBK-4G.
Grid Iron have great Quirks. Even if not using Gauss the quirk is loveable. You can have more build variations. YLW is super fun and lovely. HOWEVER build options are limited. You only get your mega ballistic arm (2 hardpoints 10 slot) and then your 2x energy hardpoint in your CT. So basically unless you are using AC20 or things like 2x UAC5 the other CN9 are better. That said, a YLW with AC20 is super fun to build, there is just less variation. I like YLW more than AH, but CN9-A wins all.
The YLW beats the grid iron (especially if you don't like gauss). The hunchback 4G beats the YLW tho. the YLW is a better hero, but the hunchies are a better chassis with massive quirks.
Here is a video I did a year and a half or more ago... This was long before quirks. The HBK is a BEAST!!!
thanks for all your input people Yen Lo Wang won out due to its maneuverability and that it can zombie with its 2 lasers making it super durable despite Slightly less firepower!
