Has this question ever been asked here? Or anywhere? If so, I apologize.

Anyways, I'm just curious. I'm not buying one, but I'm just looking through all of the Hero mechs in the game at the moment. Figured it might make a fun topic question.

Feel free to answer for any reason, meta, hilarity, uniqueness, camo, lore, only one you own, whatever. :)

Here is the only thread rule:
You can only make comments in the thread after you posted your favorite Hero Mech, and why. So if you want to be chatting it up in here, you better contribute first or I'll kill you in game. I'll haunt your dreams. You ever been sitting powered down, cored, weaponless, scared, cowering under the tunnel in upper River City Night? Staring at a wall? Listening closely for the 'thump... thump... thump...' of incoming footsteps that singal your doom? That's some random guy that's gonna kill you, it's not me. I'm gonna literally kill your mech inside of mechlab. So contribute before getting on tangents or insulting someone's pick, thanks.

    My Hero:
Heavy Metal. Why? Because it used to be able to JJ so high from point blank range, that it could still have arm range down below and thus circumvent that whole '90m min range for PPC' thing that newbs always seem to get hung up on. Also, it is the original troll horn. I never played this mech or Highlanders more than a dozen or so rounds, but I like the Highlander aesthetics, I like the hot pink camo, I like the (til warhorns) unique trollsound, I loved having other good poptarting teammates in them. Great mix of hardpoints and locations. Good armor, decent speed, tartable. Annnd then they got nerfed in terms of how high they could JJ (this was before the actual JJ nerfs, was a special case if I'm not mistaken). No longer uber, it's still pretty cool. If I had million MC randomly injected into my account, prolly the first thing I'd buy.

    Honorable Mentions:
Death's Knell... cuz it's the only Hero I own. I think I bought it to protest any notion of 'pay to win' when the Heavy Metal hopped onboard the poptart bandwagon... or maybe to protest it's subsequent nerf, I can't remember to be honest. Either way, great troll/chillmode Mech, or even if you wanted to go balls out with lasers pre-Firestarts. Symmetry, speed, sensitivity on the mech is top notch... energy boating is always best boating.

Sparky... cuz I've looked through the Mechs a lot, and I hate to get a little bit emo here, but... I feel bad for the Grif. I truly do, I can't explain it... I think it has the fewest builds here on mechspecs? I rarely see it in game? I was checking this shit last week randomly... anyways, the Griffen doesn't seem to be a popular Mech. When I spot one I just want to give it a hug and give it shelter like it was some sort of homeless alley cat. If I played IS I'd play Grifs a lil bit for fun. Sparky looks great with all the energy hardpoints, cool camo too. Go Sparky! :D

St. Ives Blues... essentially the same as above. It's cute, it looks like a great hardpoint setup for me, the mech seems underrepresented... I like the Vindy as well. Again, if I played IS I'd have at least one for fun. :)

A few others I think are decent:
    Loup De Guerre
    Ilya

    Yen-Lo-Wang --- Something about a fast Medium with an AC20 . . . just so unmistakably fun!

    or

Misery --- What can I say without saying too much? High Energy mounts in the arms, ability to carry a Ballistic of any size to go with those Energy weapons, a CT Laser for Zombie mode . . . it's just too good.

That said, if they every came out with a decent Banshee hero, that would probably become my new favorite; I just love the Banshee style.

Oxide, 35 tons of pure fun and firepower.

The Huginn makes a nice alternative.

I see on this thread I also answered the Arrow, but it was before the quirk change and mostly because I love the AC/20 mediums. It's still cute, the loadout is still powerful (2 LPLas), but it's not the same anymore.
    Yen-Lo-Wang then.

Ember still takes the cake from me. Even post-quirk world, it is still a fearsome and powerful mech. Good jump jet potential with the standard build, it can move in and out of enemy formations, poke, and generally make a pain in the ass of itself in any situation. Ember has always been one of my best mechs for a reason.

Pirate's Bane!! I reluctantly bought this mech but I have never looked back. But that might be because looking back in a Locust can have severe consequences. I just love the speed/ecm/size/movement, it is just an absolute riot to play.

TDK is a close second with the Anansi just behind. I suppose I'm a huge fan of those annoying lights that zip around as cause havoc.

Someone is gonna shoot me for saying this XD but the fact the Loup De Guerre can be built and painted to resemble the old Megatron from transformers all the way down to the Right arm PPC and from the back it looks an awful lot like him :p I just have to choose it even if it isn't the optimal Hero mech

I ranted about and totally dismissed the Sparky when he came out, but it turned out to be a beast of a medium mech. Misery is still working great for me even in the times of clan mechs in the opponent forces as is the Ember, but which looses a bit when compared to FS9-A or -S. YenLoWang won't surprise any opponent anymore, but still kills things quickly. That arm-mounted AC20 is a beast. Same holds true for the CN9-AH, the (L) being comparable to a hero from a technical point of view. Both Firebrand and IM fell out of favor for me for being quite fragile facing clans.

Arrow and GI are fun mechs, but only fill small niches in my view. TDK is as funny as ever, and the Oxide can deliver quite some pain. I am positively surprised by the Pirates' Bane as well.

Both DS & HM suffer from being the hero mechs of badly hit chassis and I'd prefer them getting some additional love. BH is... well, BH. Works for me, but not so much for others as it seems. I also own both of the Dragon twins, but they are quite special as well.

Can't comment on X5, Anansi, Huginn (but which usually is quite a scary sight nowadays), GD, IV4, PB or LM.

I'm a fan of the YLW. Not because it is the be all to end all of mechs, it isn't, not by a long shot, but because of the story and background that goes with it. I've read most of the Battletech books, TROs and have played TT for going on 25 years now; it has a rich and in-depth history to it unlike many of the other arbitrary names PGI throws out there to make a buck.

I'm really enjoying my 000(L) which I have dubbed "Howling Fury". It isn't really a "Hero Mech" but I do get a CBill bonus on it and so am enjoying it and qualifying with it as well as farming CBills. My third qualifying mech I mowed down muthafuckas like it was that forest scene in Predator. 4 kills in 60 seconds.

The name makes sense. Picture the crab, so slow, waddling about. Trying desperately to get to the bathroom before disaster strikes. Howling Fury indeed... ;)

Cool...could you perhaps give an example of something boss about the YLW from lore? Just curious. :)

You know YLW is the Solaris Champion Mech of a godly pilot, right?:D

    Certainly.

I can tell you that the lore variant of YLW had spiky nails on the left hand that were used for physical confrontations. I can tell you that Justin Xiang-Allard was the original pilot and was an underdog Solaris champion. YLW could devestate mechs in larger weight classes because of the replacement of the AC10 with an AC20 (stripping out the LRMs). I can tell you that he gifted it to his son Kai Allard-Liao who is arguable one of the best mechwarriors in the inner sphere and who literally took on the clans singlehandedly, to protect Victor Davion, during one of the first battles with the clans; later earning the respect of the Elementals whom he commanded during a rescue op.

It is also one of the few mechs that you can trace from 3025 well into the Dark Ages when shit got all Japanamation looking on mechs.

Yen Lo Wang is the name of the Chinese god of death. Justin Xiang Allard, one of the greatest mechwarriors in the Inner Sphere, piloted it in Solaris, becoming the champion. He "defected" to the Capellan Confederation with it, but was spying for Hanse Davion; when he returned to the Federated Suns, he brought YLW with him. The mech was later passed to his son, Kai, who also became a legendary pilot. While he did many things during the Clan Invasion, Kai used YLW to single handedly fight to Victor Steiner-Davion's side, and allow him to escape capture as a bondsman during the Battle of Alyina in 3052. While Victor escaped, Kai was trapped on the planet, where he survived for over a year behind enemy lines. He bested an Elemental in a hand-to-hand battle, and nearly bested a second (the fight was interrupted by Comstar, who had begun Operation Scorpion), but escaped the fight in a bout of luck when he was thrown off a cliff...into a tree, which broke his fall.

He then broke a friend (Dierdre Lear) and a group of Jade Falcon Elementals from a Comstar prison, then joined them in a battle where he obliterated the Comstar forces present on Alyina. As per his agreement with the Falcon commander, he was given safe passage from the planet (as well as assistance recovering Yen Lo Wang, which had fallen into the ocean when he saved Victor).

The mech continued to fight in the war, but Kai also used it to win the Solaris championship (as did his niece, Danai Liao-Centrella). It also again protected Victor Steiner-Davion in the final Battle of New Avalon in 2067.

In other words, of all the hero mechs, it can be traced through...what, 16 novels? 18? It has a LOT of story and exploits ;)

LOL not quite. But when I open up with the macro'd UAC5s (assuming they don't jam on me) I giggle like a little school boy as Tweens piloting DireDouches attempt to torso twist and back peddle out of the advancing maelstrom that is Grimm!!!

If they jam bad? Yeah, then it doesn't look so impressive. It happens (shrugs)
