Given the upcoming VAT sale, I might get Into SC at long last. Been holding off and waiting for more finished stuff but a raise of this kind kinda pushes things.

My interest would be exploring/mining/trading (multi) with one ship and a secondary fighter class.

Any tips when the sale comes are appreciated but no guarentees as I'm still a bit on the fence. It's a fair stake to put in a game without LTI, it will undoubtedly make for more tension and excitement as many points out.

In fairness I think the sale ships have two years insurance which is fairly tasty in itself. the problem is the bread and butter ships just have the standard 6 months so my suggestion of the Constellation is less interesting.

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Constellation-Andromeda-Physical

At a more sensible cost but sadly also with 6 months insurance is the Freelancer:

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Freelancer

Those two are work horse ships that can do anything and be specced for a lot of roles as you go along. The Constellation also carries quite a lot of firepower.

In terms of a fighter I use the Super Hornet which is the closest non capital ship to a military version in the game and gets 2 years insurance - note its not a package just a stand alone ship:

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Standalone-Ships/F7C-M-Super-Hornet-Anniversary

Again at a more sensible price you have the Avenger which is a Warthog type craft based around a single massive gun with small supporting weapons to try and disable their target. Its a bounty hunter so also has cells. I've listed both the package and ship version as if you're getting one of the larger ships like the Constellation or Freelance I presume you already have a package:

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Avenger
    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/ships/aegis-avenger/Avenger

Alternatively just go for the cheapest package and grind in game...

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Aurora-MR

Its probably a fairly awful ship though as it essentially just allows you to play!

Overall..... I started with the Constellation and think its still one of the better ships out there. Plus who doesn't like the Millenium Falcon? ;)

That is exactly the way I went. However I would never have bought any of the ships if they hadn't had LTI.

Essentially I bought the Colonel package way back in the days to get me the Hornet which I later on upgraded to a Super Hornet (with a military skin thanks to a certain benefactor :) ) Super Hornet should be THE best fighter available to citizens.

Added to that the Freelancer. Ship that can do nigh everything, cargo, exploring, missile boating.

Both ships come at the higher end of the lower end prices so fit me perfectly. If you can dish out more cash, by all means go for the Constellation.

Avanger is what I am looking at as well. But when browsing through the ships both the Hornet and the 315s also caught my interest. I am too noobish to tell the difference short of the Avanger obv. having more cargo space. Can one of you plz enlighten me about the ups & downs of those three and how they fare in comparison to esch other?

    Picked up a 350R.
    Speed is Life.

Also, currently they have some nasty engine bugs for AC, as in when you die your engines don't work on respawn. :/

Still a fun ship, and an early alpha-stage game so weird bugs are expected.

Then just go race. Its quite a lot of fun. But yeah its alpha game play its good that ppl play cos the more they do the more info they can gather and more bugs ironed out. But its not for everyone.

    And a Super Hornet.

And debating a Freelancer DUR once PU goes alpha... ohgodmywallet...

    Edit:

On the other hand, I've played Kerbal Space program for nearly 1000 hours. I got it for $20. SC probably won't be that good for value/$, but it's likely to last for quite a while, and I've spent more on worse artwork in the past. My mother is an artist, I've got no moral problems with buying art, digital or otherwise. And really, that's what a game like this is: art with some (very fun) interactivity on top.

I decided that I'd love to get myself a Cutlass, but can't justify paying that much. In addition to this, guys from my unit keep on arguing it would be so much more fun just to get the Aurora for Beta access and the earn all the other stuff in game. One of us even won a destroyer thingy for multiple players and said we woukd use it for gathering money together. Dunno...

TBH its not a bad idea at all. It has the advantage you can just save money and work towards the specific ship you want to fly when the game starts properly. You just get a leg up by spending RL money. In my case I'm planning to go for a larger ship as a goal and therefore having the tools to save the in game grind is quite useful. I'm also lucky enough to be in the position where it currently is affordable for me.

Yep. I'm specifically NOT buying the 315p or the Constellation Andromeda because I want to earn them in game.

Quick review of the F7C-M vs the 350r: Super hornet is less buggy, works better at combat.... But when the 350r spawns in with a HUD and both engines, it's OP. Even with the missing missile hardpoints. Part of that is the OS6s, which I don't have on the hornet, but the ridiculously high speed/maneuverability are most of it. Have to be careful with the meatbag, but the ability to do high-speed high-damage passes is great. Exactly what I was looking for in a ship. It will take a lot more time for me to get particularly good with the thing, but I think they'll be much better in combat than people realize.

I essentially started out getting me a hauler and a fighter with LTI to have a saftey cushion in case things go awry. As I learnt in EVE (where I have enough ships spread across the galaxy to outfit an entire fleet but cannot access them anymore) that is always a good thing,...

I haven't played SC since they changed something to the flight controls essentially making me useless with a mouse. Am looking for a decent joystick to take over now. (Currently looking at the HOTAS X and T1600)

The primary obstacle (not a new issue as all of you must've thought about this and I see Aylek is aswell) is wrapping my head around the idea of spending that much cash on a digital product which is non-permanent. Arguably, any game we do invest in such as MWO and the content we purchase/earn is only available as long as the game is around but this is a little different.

It certainly gives spice to play but it is also many times over the amount one spends on other games. SC is a new kind of buyin, at least for me. Do I want the shortcut or go for the base ship and just go earn it from base level and up?

    Hmm. This fence is uncomfortable.
