Your most cringeworthy builds.

It's the only (standard) Centurion, but there also are Hunchbacks, Shadowhawks, BlackJacks and Trebuchets, and all are better than a Cent with only an AC/20.

 

NO BJ, SHD's or TBT's have new quirks with AC 20's.

That leaves the HBK-4G.... which I mysteriously already use as well for AC20's

 

I wouldn't trade medium lasers, or even a MLas+SRM combo (on Shadowhawks), for a quirk.

Anyway, back to cringeworthy builds with this fearsome Locust-1M:



And this Atlas-S, actually almost excellent. But I can't help wondering why the hell a small laser?

He was hiding in the back - shooting at single mechs in between the buildings while the team got crushed miles away....sigh

 

Every since the tournament last weekend, or maybe it was with the new rewards system but I didn't notice until the tournament, I've seen lrm's on mechs they have no right being on and it bothers me. I've lost plenty of matches because everyone on the team only brought lrm's and the enemy brought proper weapons along with a moderate amount of lrm's.

On the plus side I'm becoming very good at avoiding lrm's, which really isn't that difficult. It's also fun to shoot at that lrm fatlas from 800m while he dumbly tries to get a lock.

 

Ha I had a guy on that map in a TBolt trying to snipe with an AC10 from the island the other night while we rolled over his team. His aim was so bad that I autoran my ember at an angle toward him typing "We're coming to get you!" over and over Wasn't a cringeworthy build, just a cringeworthy tactic...

 

That reminds me I screenshotted a clan mech with 4 different weapon platforms that all operated at different ranges last night.... must post it.

 

Three entries from tonight... no please no! Coincidentally The LRM 5 one spent most of his firing time JUST using the LRM 5. At least the LRM 20 one highly effective...







My objection to these builds is the heavily varied ranges. I get two ranges if you're covering for a shortfall, e.g. a LRM'er with backup ML's, but picking up to 5 ranges and weaponry that is utterly ineffective or incapable of being used effectively together is a total waste.

Coincidentally, the LRM 20 TDR was effective but because the pilot is good. I just see no necessity for 4 different point blank range weapons.

I agree.
I always say a good build is easy to use. It means a simple weapon system and not a lot of weapon groups. That's why I'm such a boater

 

Had another "cringeworthy play" guy, was a TBolt with 1 ERLL, and 5 MLas...trying to snipe with the MLas at 600m. I mentioned something about it, and he just said "Range module."

"Yeah, but even with that, you're at the very outside of your range at 600m, doing almost no damage. Hence, why you only did 90 the whole match..."

He seemed to think that he was doing full damage as long as he hit. Le sigh.

 

Half a floating ton and didn't take ammo? Or downgraded what was originally an ML to an SL to buy a half ton of ammo?

Some of those builds can still operate with all weapons at one range, their 'kill box' is just specific. I generally don't recommend such builds to new pilots or those who don't know how to handle it, though...

 

I could see the TBR doing well in the hands of a good pilot, just on the basis of it having a lot of options that all work well (lasers still work just fine up close, after all). The rest...eh. Something about Thunderbolts lately has just been inviting weird builds.

 

That's what I think went through his mind, but don't tell me you can't find 1/2 ton of an 100 toner (striping leg armor for example).

 

If you run out of ammo every match, than either you are or I am doing something wrong. I run the AH with just 21 shots and I run dry every tenth game or so, not more. Ok, I admit I might die quick when in the thick of the battle, but not before taking another med or a heavy with me. But even if I don't die, I still got 1-2 shots in the end and still managed to place some good shots and get a kill or at least some components for dinner.

Maybe it's just because I need longer to engage because I flank the enemy and attack when I'm certain I'm behind the enemy lines.

But still... to get back to the topic: I've seen a lot of crap builds lately. But they're topped by the stupidity of their drivers. Quite frankly, a good pilot can even drive a good match in a stock Summoner... but lately, I don't know man. I see a lot of Direwolf pilots that don't know the difference between LRM's and SRM's, that fire alphas only and don't care about friendly fire.... that'S far worse than a 9 Taglaser Hunchie (this can be even helpful by tagging).

 

I ran a Huginn with 2xLRM5. The other team actually said "you know its bad when the Raven with 2xLRM5 is the biggest threat."

Quick death aside (in that case, you're doing something wrong indeed), in my opinion it strongly depends on which weapon system, SRMs or AC, you prioritize. My primary weapon is the AC, I load 5 tons (35 shots) and burn at least 4 every game. Making SRMs primary makes sense since the damage per ton of ammo is higher (though it makes you much more vulnerable) and in this case you may find 3 tons of AC enough, given you load enough SRMs to deal the damage.

 

Eheh, yeah, I've been guilty of running weird builds on my TBolts recently. On my 5S(P) I have LRM20+LRM10+2xERLLas+TAG . Even though it's horribly inefficient (LRM10+20 weighs 1 ton more than 2xLRM15 and has weird cooldowns) it is incredibly effective at farming CBills.

As for the builds @Remarius posted, the TDR-9S isn't too bad, though I question the usefulness of mounting a single SSRM2, and I've found that the 2xMG are also pretty ineffective . It seems like he just wanted to fill every single weapon hardpoint and that's what fit.

 

Yup I'm running 4 or 4.5 I think currently and never run out of SRM ammo so will probably drop some to up my AC to bring that up to 5 tons. The AC20 is definitely my primary.
