    Hey guys,

I am going to be upgrading my box here shortly. I already have all the pieces excepting the CPU, MOBO and RAM.

Does anyone have any suggestions on CPU MOBO combo? I have a ti660OC card with the 3x SLI option. I doubt I would put more than 2 in but I'd would consider the option. I am partial to INtel as well.

Any Mechspeccers out there have any ideas/ suggestions?

    Thanks all!

wait until after Christmas, after sales will be good.

You are going to pay a pritty penny to get a great intel CPU, but it shouldn't be too hard.

2011 chipset seems to be the top line currently. I would recommend the i7-4820K chip, as it can support Very fast ram (2133mhz), and most games can't take advantage of core numbers over quad yet in this case.

I have loved ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards for some time, for both Intel and AMD.

This one would easily suit your needs, and it's software works quite well. the UEFI BIOS works very well which is what I like about these new motherboards.

Gskill has a few good offerings for fast ram, I would recommend picking up 2 of these sets, because 16gb of ram is sooo much fun!

Corsair also works well, but is more expensive.
Crucial works, sometimes, as long as it is not overclocked.

I would also recommend going to a pre-build water cooler for the CPU. Push-Pull setups are hard to do, but even push only radiators outperform air coolers by a huge factor.

I HIGHLY recommend Cooler Master Radiators. I have had the dual for over 2 years now, and it's still as quiet as the day I put it in.

Any case, any place. GL with your build!!

I'm upgrading to a 780 SuperClock (Ti I think) for Star Citizen but waiting until the price drops in the near year from 750 to whatever it drops down to.

Since Star Citizen is probably going to support Mantel I'll go AMD for my next rig - R9-280 (maybe 290 next year) and a highend APU.

What is your financial budget? Without that info we can hardly give you any suggestions. As Vergere already said, Intel Hexcores (Core i7 Series) suffice for most games. Socket 1150 is the recent standard. If you don't want to spend too much money on the CPU, you can chose a Quadcore. Usually they can do fine for most recent Games. Best Price/Performance Ratio has the Core i5-4570. Asus Boards are very recommended. I have one myself and no problem since 3 Yrs. Any B85M or B87M Board should do fine. RAM Brands that i recommend Crucial, G.Skill and Corsair. You should also consider a fast SSD harddisk for even higher read/write speeds.. GL mate!

Thank you guys!! Great suggestions, and thank you!

To answer the question, I would like to keep the total under about $500 if possible.

Anyone have a favorite MOBO currently? :)

I think you will end up spending a lot more than 500$. If you want this to be a gaming rig you are going to quickly learn that anything less than $500 is a sub-par gaming rig that will be out-dated quickly.

Do you guys find that an AMD, being cheaper, would be a worthwhile alternative?

FWIW, all I need left is the MOBO, CPU and Memory. I already have a good card, PS, case and all that.

Oh, and major thanks for the reminder for the after Christmas sales. Do not forget this thread! :) I'll hit you guys back in a month! :)

I'm running an AMD system right now. It works well enough, but top line gaming rigs use Intel and Nvidia for 2 reasons. Nvidia has better Graphic abilities with PhysX, and Particle effects. The second is that both companies focus ONLY on the PC market; they don't split their priorities, getting you better cards and processors for your money. AMD is moving to an all APU series Proccesor, while Intel is still on their current upgrade path. Who knows which one is better, it's too early to tell. But so far, APU's are better as stand alone units that do general task's. Intel and Nvida both do very specific tasks with their proccesors, and that's better for games, as they use the standard 32bit architecture STILL. While that has more to do with the OS, Hardware does play a big factor. And now that people have easy access to large amounts of quite fast ram, 64bit is becoming more common.

If I were to recommend an AMD APU and GPU, I would do these three

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202077

This would get you started, and I have also use MSI mobo's before, and their quality is almost better than ASUS, but their software is a bit odd sometimes. The APU should work well, if you use a water cooler. The Videocard is not top of the line, but it's very similar to my current card, the 7870, so it should get you about 60fps for MWO. Basicly, 4.0GHz CPU +1000MHz core speed on a GPU should be enough for 60fps gameing in MWO currently. That could all change, once DX11 and UI2.0 come out, but lets hope not.

we are speaking of a decent CPU/Mobo/RAM package right? Which Combo do you suggest for more than $500 for not getting out-dated too quickly? Most expensive part is the CPU, the other two are quite affordable. Maybe Core i7, SLI/Crossfire-Mobo and 12GB Rams? With a Core i5, non dual-GPU supporting mobo and 12GB Rams you can keep the price sub$500 atm for sure.

IMO even if the system gets outdated in let's say two yrs, you still can upgrade again as long as the CPU-Socket is still common on market. As long as the game devs don't fully use the power of multi-core CPUs i don't see a reason to spend too much money for a high class CPU - prices will quickly fall after the release of the recent new Console Generation, where Devs will finally focus on Multi-Core Programming and so changing the market price politics. Give em 1-2 yrs.

p.s. $500 is the price for me as well to spend for an upgrade! I also wait for After.Christmas/New Yrs Eve Prices and maybe buy my upgrade late January. I only need a new CPU, GPU and Rams.. Later definitely buy an SSD-Disk to only install Power-Games there.

i7 2600 (got it) + 16gb (I have 8gb) + GTX 780 Ti (once the price comes down to below 600) = My Upgrade Path'

Won't be outdated for at LEAST 6 months (sarcasm)

If you have a microcenter nearby I would go there and get the I5-4670K - $199.99 with an Asrock Z87 Pro 4 Motherboard - $115 with the CPU. that gives you plenty of room in your budget for Ram. I built this exact combo for a friend recently and paired with a good GPU it has no problem with any game on the market. You could spend another $80 and go up to the i7-4770 but hyperthreading isn't that useful for gaming at this point.

Ya I wish it was closer to me, I have to drive 2 hours got get there. But it was worth it this summer as I rebuilt both mine and the wife's comp. I figured it saved me $100 over the best prices I could get on the internet after paying gas and tolls.
