So which do you like better? The original or the more expensive and slower plus-size version? Feel free to propose others if you prefer.
I vote the Mad Cat II. You have more options... you can easily go Artemis for example, which the timber wolf cannot:
Or you could run an xl375 and ER medium lasers. You could even run 4xcLRM-20+A (if it's team LRM day). The point is, the mad cat lets you modify the engine size, armor, structure, and has more space in the torsos for weapons. The timber wolf doesn't have much flexiblity. I would rather own the mad cat as I don't think it would ever get old, and if my first build doesn't suit my fancy I know I'll be able to find one that does. All the same, if your two builds were stock builds on trial mechs I couldn't modify, I would play the timber wolf over the mad cat. I mean, it's the same weapons and better speed for 15 tons less. It is a little hotter and has less ammo, but it's probably a better build.
For the build itself, I feel a lot of tonnage is just put to waste when you run an xl400. The tbr does it faster and is more agile for what that's worth. If the mcii would run even more dhs it might make it better because it can alpha without worrying about ghostheat. For potential builds of course the mcii could run bigger nastier things, but that's not really the point of this question, is it? Love the title btw
