I was curious how many veteran Dragon players were out there, what kind of advice they could give me on builds/playstyles, and what are some of the worst and best Dragon chassis?

It honestly looks to me like the Dragon does not suffer from Firestarter syndrome (Where only a few Variants are actually unique) and can actually do a lot. Even though the large nose does get me blown up a lot
Thanks to the quirk system there are more people out there who at least are getting careful when spotting an opposing 1N. Hell, they are even called prime targets. Would you have thought in January 2013? Me neither.
Note that I already do own & love the Flame. Additionally I also mastered the 1C as well and went all the way to completing elite on both the 1N and 5N, so I do know a lot about Dragons.

My gut feeling tells me that the 1C can already mount all the best builds the Fang can do, so the only significant difference seems to be the ability to mount 2 ballistics. Now, double AC5 backed up by double ML and SRM4 certainly looks nice, but ... really?
So... I was screwing around with a buddy of mine who is leveling Catapults, and I got to wondering if stuffin NARC on my dragon would be worth our while. On first glance (and second and third) it seems to be horrible/wrong, but perhaps if I focus on more scouting/support it could work out?

What are your guys thoughts? NARC is very heavy (and requires ammo), and I also think we'd need somewhere near 100kph to be useful at all. Whenever I mix around a build, it looks something like a watered down Kintaro, but I feel like there has to be something I can do.

How much NARC ammo do you guys use generally? I've been fine with 2 tons usually, and if we do that, I may be able to throw something together.

In a quick toss up, I got something like this:

This is all in theory, so I just tossed in the biggest engine I could fit with all that. I could probably go bigger if I remove BAP, but for some reason I decided to add...

Normally I would post a build with both a Smurfy link and the input table, but this is the general template I've been using on my dragons (which begs the question why I need more than one? well to level elites...and then I wanted a Fang...and eventually I'll get a 5N and use this as well). This build would work on the Flame even, but it swaps hard points around. I tried different things with the different models, including using no ballistics or using multiple AC/2s or AC/5s, but overall this general template is the best working system I've used, and it works really good. I use this on my 1N, 1C, and Fang.
Chassis: Dragon
Engine: 300 XL (I've found this is the best engine for the dragon in terms of what it allows me to put on)
Heat Sinks: 15-16 DHS, depending on what will fit
Upgrades: Endo Steel, DHS

So, I just got my first real Dragon, a 1C. It seemed like a good idea at the time, there are a lot of good setups for it, it's relatively safe with an XL engine, it can have arm Gauss, etc. I've read skribs' Dragon Template, I've ran Pepperdoggy's build, Mythweaver's build, and a few of my own invention, and I think that I'm a fairly intelligent, careful, and skilled pilot. In my other Mechs, my W/L ratio is about 1.2, and my K/D ratio is about 2.25 For some reason though, I'm just not "getting it" in my 1C. My 1C W/L ratio is .64, and my K/D is .44, and my Xp per match and dmg per match have both gone down.

In general, it seems like the Dragon is slow, ponderous, and fragile. I've died to a LOT of side torso destructions, which surprised me, because the shoulders are pretty small. Are people really aiming for the shoulders, or did something change with the hitboxes, or am I just getting unlucky? I try to stay back and snipe with Gauss, (I think I'm a pretty good shot.) and then...

I just made a quick reference sheet for myself, figured I could summarize it somewhat here. This basically takes your common engines with a dragon and looks at the available weight left with various armor levels. This is for people who can get to MechSpecs but can't play around with smurfy.

All builds have the engine, endo-steel, and near-full armor (within 1 ton and within half ton, rounded to the nearest half ton), but no extra heat sinks or equipment. This gives you an idea of the tonnage you have available for weapons and special equipment. My recommendation is full armor, shaving the armor off the legs to round down to the nearest ton.

Engine Rating : Spare Tons (Armor)
300 XL : 29 tons (400 STD) : 29.5 tons (384 STD) : 30.5 tons (394 FF) : 31 tons (376 FF)
325 XL : 25.5 tons (400 STD) : 26 tons (384 STD) : 27 tons (394 FF) : 27.5 tons (376 FF)
340 XL : 23 tons (400 STD) : 23.5 tons (384 STD) : 24.5 tons (394 FF) : 25 tons (376 FF)
350 XL : 22.5 tons (400 STD) : 23...
