They are small, they are badly optimized, they have garbage visibility (thanks to nightvision / heat vision nerfs) and overall they offer less tactical approaches compared to modern maps.

    • Frozen city is a brawl fest with little to no ranged combat (there are literally 2 ""sniping"" spots in the whole map)
    • Forest colony is the only map with a bit of variety, but it's either full long range in the open sea or close quarter brawl fest on the ground (and I hate those tree that block your visual and can't be taken down)

Am I the only one who has little to no interest in classic maps? I remember old playing frozen city, but IMHO it has aged very badly.

They're small. I like that. Makes the matches escalate quickly. That's about it for me though.

I like both. Frozen City in particular seems to punish attempts at extreme nascaring. You actually have to probe at the enemy and look for weak positions rather than rush at the slowest mech and chase them in circles. Forest Colony I like for the cave and the strategic opportunities it offers.

Both maps may be small but the actual area used on the new Forest Colony isn't that much different. The rest is wasted space. It's less true for Frozen city but there's still large areas of the map rarely explored.

  4. I like the old maps. More so I like having more map options.

They are not perfect, but visibility on hibernal rift is way worse.

    More brawling please.

They are certainly flawed maps, but I think they make a nice change - not least for the fact that sniping and nascaring rarely happen. Everyone likes a swift brawl from time to time, eh?

I think the classic maps need a once-over.

Sure it's nice playing them for some reasons, but that doesn't excuse the absolutely terrible visibility on the maps due to the heat/nv nerfs AND those lovely vision impairing bushes that can't be knocked down.

Forest Colony is an absolute nightmare to play, and I'd rather core myself than endure it again.

Really, you hate them? Interesting. Well, I like Frozen City cuz I'm good at brawling with my BSW HR I noticedthat.

I like them as well cuz I'm curious and optimistic. Ha! Well, I can tell the classic maps are too small for some warriors. :L

I have no issues on hibernal rift: it's too white, but I can see enemies from afar. In both forest colony and frozen city I can't recognize mechs from afar due to fog, plus trees almost completely cover mechs, so I can't really see anything if there is someone covered by ECM.

Brawl or nascar aren't the issue: the issue is about lack of range variety. In Canyon Network I can choose wheter or not to follow the nascar and brawl or find my little sniper nest and hope nobody will flank me. In both classic maps this isn't really an option with the only exception of forest classic (you can move out in the open provided you like being constantly in danger or you have an ECM equipped).

It's so small most nascar attempts will end up in a entrenched firing line, which is the natural counter to mindless pushing... But frozen city classic also has the issue that it's so small (and still with bad cover) there is little space to push togheter with your friendlies or move back a little to avoid being in the frontline all the time.

Yeh OK, these are not great maps, but we really REALLY needed more variety in the maps.
It is a lazy solution by PGI, but it does help and these maps get voted for less and less against the popular larger maps, so we do not play them too often.

Overall the effect of adding them is positive. At least for me.

Having looked for the faults Carlo mentioned, I now find myself irritated by the perma-shrubbery. A quick pass to make them adhere to the same standards as the rest of the maps would seem desirable. Still, on balance, i think they add flavour.

Now for every tree it should have fallen by my stompy mech, a "NI!" will play in my mind.

Also, I've recently found out that maxed post-processing increased blur on distant objects, which is why enemy mechs on both Forest Colony classic and Frozen City classic were almost unrecognisable and they were blending too much with the landscape... Potato graphic FTW.

I still have issues on distant targets, but not as much as before.

It never fails to amaze me how people hate frozen city and forest colony classic maps, because they're "too small", yet happily vote for HPG manifold domination mode.

Because HPG manifold have multiple spots where you can play with a medium/long range build. Shadow cat ERPPC or LPL build can climb up to the walls. Vomit laser / gauss vomit / dakka / ECM builds can either camp one of the entrances to the center rather than taking top to fully exploit their range advantage while maintaining cover... And yet it is a very valid map for brawlers. That's the kind of range variety that frozen city is missing, while forest colony classic seems either pure brawl or pure sniping, with little to no choices inbetween.

Last but not least, voting domination doesn't actually imply someone is using a brawler, it possibly mean that he feels sure he can maintain his range advantage or trusts enough his team mates to hold opponents away from him.

Domination is best for LRMs, actually. You can hide in the back and know that there will be at least two friendly UAVs lighting up a decent number of targets congregated around the piss-bowl on the minimap. But that's technically off-topic.

I'm more or less indifferent to Frozen City, meaning it's just another map to me. Forest Colony had changed before I started playing MWO so that map has been exciting for me, but I despise invincible trees that can stop the 9.5 megajoules of kinetic energy a Timberwolf at full speed has.

Hibernal Rift is actually nice since it seems to have much better accessibility for mechs without JJs, and I don't mind the visibility since they toned it down.
