faster and more maneuverable. A good Victor pilot can run circles around the average Highlander build out there. I know, I've done it.

As near as I can tell, the Dragon Slayer is a Highlander-y Victor, and the HM is a Victor-y Highlander.

I was a bit hesitant about the Dragon Slayer as well, since on paper it looked like the 9K could do everything better (3 energy in actuated arms vice spread between torso and arm). However once I started taking advantage of the 2 ballistic hardpoints it has (2x AC5) it really came into its own. Its my favorite variant now.

Highlander and Victor's are similar but Victor is more agile and responsive which gives it an edge in a brawl. Highlander is a bit more durable and having extra 10 tons to work with opens option for STD engines for increased staying power.

Haven't played with Highlanders yet, but preliminary testing by a friend of mine makes it seem Highlanders can fullfill line mech role akin to Atlas. Victors best as mobile direct fire support.

I'm a bit of a schizophrenic pilot, loving heavy firepower and being able to take a few hits, but still liking some maneuverability to re-position fairly quickly to adapt to new situations. I loved the Cataphract for the longest time because it was the only mech which to me capable of hitting that sweet spot of armor, firepower and maneuverability which suited my playstyle...remained that way for quite a bit even after the introduction of other heavy mechs.

The Victor has changed that, having a decent amount of hard hitting, arm mounted weapons, with the armor and speed balance to use them effectively. This is greatly enhanced by the addition of the newer maps (predominantly Canyon) that provide much more pronounced advantages for JJs. The DS is fairly fun when outfitted with the dual AC5 / 3 LL loadout, but hands down the fun factor goes to the AC20 variants, or at least the 9S I've had the chance to test so far. Doing a couple of test runs in a stock 9S, playing with the "crouching tiger, rabid bunny" style of hopping over hills & using the arm-mounted weapons to their greatest advantage on slopes and in hit and run attacks has netted me a 4-1 kill ratio and the amusement of seeing the exact second a Catapult pilot had his "Oh, s#^$" moment just before dying...

My only disappointment about them is the random chance inherent in the matchmaking system which often leaves my Victor as the heaviest mech on the team, resulting in me having to hold the line against assaults which are better suited for stand up brawling and not being able to use the Victor's strengths to their advantage.

Who else is looking forward to Oct 21 patch where the VTRs probably will re-gain their agility (and some other quirks on top maybe)?

6.5 hours until servers go down. Time has come for some serious Clan ass kicking. VTR 9B already waits with AC20, SRM8, 2 MLas @ XL385... oh, and then there's my baby, the Slayer.
